Sri Lanka's President rejected a telephone appeal by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to reconsider his push to reintroduce the death penalty after 43 years.
Antonio Guterres had telephoned him after Sirisena signed four death warrants.
He accused the European Union of interfering in the internal affairs of his country, and said that EU diplomats had threatened him with tariffs if Sri Lanka went ahead with the executions.
Iran Breaks Uranium Enrichment Limit
Iran acknowledged it had broken the limit set on its stockpile of low-enriched uranium by the 2015 nuclear deal, marking its first major departure from the agreement a year after the US unilaterally withdrew from the accord.
Iran had been expected for days to acknowledge it broke the limit after earlier warning it would do so.
Iran threatened to increase its enrichment of uranium closer to weapons-grade levels by July 7.
Under terms of the nuclear deal, Iran agreed to have less than 300kg of uranium enriched to a maximum of 3.67%. Previously, Iran enriched as high as 20%, which is a short technical step away from reaching weapons-grade levels. It also held up to 10,000 kg of the higher-enriched uranium.
Liberty Steel, part of entrepreneur Sanjeev Gupta's global GFG Alliance, completed the acquisition of seven major steelworks and five service centres across seven European countries from ArcelorMittal.
The 740 million euro deal makes Liberty Steel one of the top ten producers globally, excluding China, with a total rolling capacity in excess of 18 million tonnes covering a wide range of finished products.
This is the largest single transaction undertaken by GFG and brings the Alliance's worldwide workforce to nearly 30,000 across 30 counties.
The seven sites employ over 14,000 people and include the major integrated steel works at Ostrava in the Czech Republic and Galaţi in Romania as well as rolling mills at Skopje (North Macedonia), Piombino (Italy), Dudelange (Luxembourg) and two plants near Liege in Belgium. The service centres are based in France and Italy.
OPEC Set to Extend Oil Supply Cut
OPEC and its allies look set to extend oil supply cuts at least until the end of 2019 as Iran joined top producers Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Russia in endorsing a policy aimed at propping up the price of crude amid a weakening global economy.
OPEC and its allies led by Russia have been reducing oil output since 2017 to prevent prices from sliding amid soaring production from the United States, which has become the world's top producer in 2019 ahead of Russia and Saudi Arabia.
Fears about weaker global demand as a result of a U.S.-China trade spat have added to the challenges faced by the 14-nation Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in recent months.

CRI Group, which is into fluid management solutions, invested Rs. 35 crore ($5 million), setting up facilities in the U.S. and Mexico.
As per G. Soundararajan, vice chairman, the plant in the U.S. would take up minor assembly works of units exported from here and supply borewell products, waste water pumps, pressure boosting and industrial pumps in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America and Caribbean countries.

All-rounder Vijay Shankar would not be able to play in the remaining matches of the ICC World Cup 2019 due to a toe injury.
Confirming the developement the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that Vijay Shankar was ruled out of the World Cup in England after sustaining a fracture in the toe while practicing at the nets. He was injured when a Jasprit Bumrah ball landed on his toe.
Shankar had joined the playing eleven as a replacement for opener Shikhar Dhawan, who was earlier ruled out of the tournament with a thumb injury.

Cori Guaff, the 15-year-old American caused one of the biggest shocks in Wimbledon history by dispatching Venus Williams 6-4 6-4 in the first round.
Aged 39, Williams is considered Wimbledon royalty as she has been part of the All England Club family for over two decades, having won the singles title five times — including two before Gauff was even born.
Playing a fearless brand of tennis that belied her young age, she bullied Williams into submission.
A break in the fifth game of the opening set, which included a delectable lob over the statuesque Williams, was enough to win her the first set.
The nerveless display continued in the second set and she sealed victory on her fourth match point when Williams netted a forehand.
One Month Extension to Complete Enumeration of NRC
The Centre was given one month extension to complete the enumeration process for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam by July 31, 2019 when the final list of the state's residents will be published.
As per a notification by the Registrar General of India, the decision was taken as the exercise to enumerate citizens in the NRC, a list of Assam's residents, could not be completed within the specified date of June 30, 2019.
On December 6, 2013, the government had issued the first notification setting a deadline of three years for completion of the entire NRC process.
However, since then, six extensions were given by the government in regular intervals as the exercise has not yet been completed.
Center Extends AFSPA in Nagaland
The Centre once again declared the entire state of Nagaland as a disturbed area and extended the imposition of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the region for six months. The order will remain effective till December, 2019.
The decision was taken in view of incidents of killings, loot and extortion in various parts of the state.
There have been demands of repealing AFSPA from various organisations in the Northeast.
The Act was in force in Nagaland for decades. It was not withdrawn even after a framework agreement was signed on August 3, 2015 by Naga insurgent group NSCN-IM general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah and government interlocutor R. N. Ravi in the presence of PM Narendra Modi.
Release Indians in Jails
India demanded the early release of its nationals held in Pakistani prisons, including missing defence personnel, 10 civilians and 124 fishermen, as the two countries exchanged lists of prisoners in each other's jails in line with an agreement signed in 2008.
The two countries exchanged the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in their custody through diplomatic channels simultaneously in New Delhi and Islamabad.
This was done in keeping with the provisions of the Agreement on Consular Access, under which such lists are exchanged on January 1 and July 1 every year.
India handed over a list of 256 Pakistani civilian prisoners and 99 fishermen in its custody. Pakistan provided a list of 52 prisoners and 209 fishermen in its custody who are Indians or believed-to-be Indians.
The Indian government called for the early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, missing Indian defence personnel and fishermen along with their boats.
The Defence Ministry issued four shipbuilding Requests for Proposal (RFP) amounting to Rs. 15,000 crore for the acquisition of various ships and craft for the Navy and the Coast Guard.
The RFP for six next generation missile vessels was issued to seven shipyards, the RFPs for eight fast patrol vessels and twelve Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) and eight missile-cum-ammunition Barges were issued to shortlisted Indian shipyards.
Former Dena Bank MD Karnam Sekar took over as the new Managing Director and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank. He replaced R. Subramaniakumar, who was instrumental in taking measures to turn around the bank, which has been reporting loses due to high NPA.
Sekar was on Special Duty and was a whole-time director of the Bank since April 2019.
His appointment came into effect on July 1, 2019.
Prior to joining IOB, he was MD & CEO of Dena Bank, a position he held till March 31, 2019.
Before that, he was Deputy MD and Chief Credit Officer in State Bank of India, heading its Highest Credit Committee.
The Uttar Pradesh government decided to request the Centre to reopen the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana, also known as Saubhagya Scheme, in the state to give another chance to the poor to get free electricity connection in case they did not get one earlier.
The government would also urge the Centre to allow three more months to complete schemes like the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and the Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) to cover the time lost due to Lok Sabha elections.
The Saubhagya Scheme, which sought to provide electricity connection to each and every household, was launched nationally in September 2017.
The scheme closed on March 31, 2019.
Teachers' Reservation Bill
Lok Sabha passed a bill that proposes to make university or college as a unit instead of department for the purpose of providing reservation for filling teachers' posts in central education institutions.
The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers' Cadre) Bill 2019, which would allow filling about 8,000 existing vacancies in 41 central universities and also provides 10% reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS), was introduced to replace an ordinance issued in March 2019.
A resolution moved by the Congress leader Adhir Rajan Chowdhury to refer the bill to the standing committee was rejected by the House.
Human Resource Development Minister (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said the bill will give a major push to reforms in the education sector, making it inclusive and fulfilling aspirations of people from different categories.
Describing this bill as beginning of new era in the country's education sector, Nishank said this proposed legislation shows Prime Minister Narendra Modiled government's commitment for the welfare of the last man in the row.
Taking on parties which opposed the bill that seeks to restore the earlier reservation system based on 200-point roster, Nishank said that it exposed their lack of commitment to welfare of backwards in society.
While moving the Bill for passage, the Minister said that it aimed to provide for reservation of posts in appointments by direct recruitment of person belonging to the SC, ST, Socially and Economically Backward Classes and EWS to teachers' cadre in certain Central Education Institution.
