Palestinians Reject U.S.-Bahrain Peace Plan

  • The Palestinians vowed to reject a U.S.-led peace initiative to be presented in Bahrain that dangles the prospect of $50 billion as an Israeli envoy bluntly told them they should surrender.
  • Finance chiefs from the U.S., oil-rich Arab states and international development institutions were flying to the tiny kingdom, which in a rarity is openly welcoming Israelis, who have forged an indirect alliance with Gulf rulers due to mutual hostility with Iran.
  • Led by President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, the Peace to Prosperity economic workshop is billed as the start of a new approach that will later include political solutions to the long intractable West Asian conflict.
  • It proposes raising more than $50 billion in fresh investment for the Palestinians and their Arab neighbours with major projects to boost infrastructure, education, tourism and cross-border trade.
  • The Palestinian Authority is boycotting the workshop, denouncing the plan for saying nothing about ending the Israeli occupation. President Mahmud Abbas has said that the Palestinians would not be slaves or servants of Mr. Kushner or other Trump aides.

Trilateral Summit at G-20

  • China confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin wouldl hold their second trilateral summit in Osaka, Japan, during the G-20 summit later this week.
  • He also signalled that the top-level trilateral mechanism of the Russia, India and China (RIC) had now become institutionalised.
  • The mechanism of the trilateral meeting maintained a sound momentum of development.

U.S. Seeks Non-military Ways to Stop Iran

  • U.S. intelligence and military officers are working on additional clandestine plans to counter Iranian aggression in the Gulf, pushed by the White House to develop new options that could help deter Tehran without escalating tensions into a full-out conventional war.
  • The goal is to develop operations similar to the cyberattacks conducted and that echo the shadow war the U.S. has accused Tehran of carrying out with attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf. Iran maintains that it was not responsible for the attacks on the tankers.
  • The cyberattacks were aimed at an Iranian intelligence group that U.S. officials believe was behind a series of attacks on tankers in the Gulf region.
  • The U.S. operation was intended to take down the computers and networks used by the intelligence group, at least temporarily. A separate online operation was aimed at taking out computers that control Iranian missile launches.
  • The White House told military and intelligence officials it wants options in line with the kind of operations conducted by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

RBI Panel Defers Reserves Report for Fourth Time

  • A Reserve Bank of India (RBI) panel deciding on guidelines for transfer of the central bank's surplus funds to the government has further delayed submitting its report.
  • The six-member panel, headed by Former RBI Governor Bimal Jalan, which was originally supposed to submit the report in April, delayed it for the fourth time due to lack of consensus.
  • The panel would submit the report after the federal budget in July.

Emami Promoters Cut 10% Stake

  • The promoters of Emami Group raised nearly Rs. 1,230 crore by selling 10% of their stake in Emami Ltd. The money thus raised is proposed to be used primarily for further paring debt at the promoter level.
  • This is the second round of stake sale with the promoters offloading 10% in February to raise about Rs. 1,600 crore.
  • The total promoter stake in Emami Ltd., subsequent to the stake sale, stands at 52.7%.

TCS to Buy More Stake in Japanese Arm

  • TCS' wholly owned subsidiary TCS Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd (TCS APAC), wouldl acquire 15% stake from MC in TCS Japan for a total consideration of JPY 3.5 billion ($32.6 million) and consequently, the holding of TCS APAC in TCS Japan will go up from the current 51% to 66.
  • A company statement said that the current governance of operations and management would remain unchanged by the share acquisition.
  • The increased equity is the latest in a series of investments that TCS made in recent years to cater to the specific needs of Japanese corporations. To augment the local workforce and gain scale, a Japan-centric Delivery Center (JDC), with enhanced language support and heavy localisation of global business practices, was set up in 2015 within TCS Sahyadri Park in Pune, India.

Tech Mahindra Unveils K2

  • Tech Mahindra Ltd introduced K2, the first Human Resource (HR) Humanoid, for its Noida Special Economic Zone Campus in Uttar Pradesh, after unveiling it in its Hyderabad campus earlier this month.
  • K2 would take over the routine HR transactions to provide constant assistance to the HR team in creating an enhanced employee experience.
  • K2 leverages state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and initiates conversation without any need for wake-up commands.
  • It can respond to queries with text display along with speech and can address general HR-related employee queries as well as handle personal requests for actions like providing payslip, tax forms and more.

Pune Wins Inter-district's Women's Football Championship

  • Pune defeated Buldhana in a close encounter, and became the champion of the WIFA Inter-district's Women's Football Championship.
  • The championship was held at Shivchatrapati Shivaji Maharaj sports complex, Jalgaon.
  • The following are the individual awards of the tournament:
  • Best player – Sonali Chimate (Pune), Best goalkeeper – Anjali Barke (Pune), Best defender – Nikita Jadhav (Buldhana), Highest goal scorer – Pratiksha Mithai (Kolhapur), Player of the final match – Dipika Hiwale (Buldhana).

Historic Firsts for Shakib

  • Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan stamped his authority in the ongoing World Cup by breaking multiple records and in the process helped Bangladesh register a 62-run win over Afghanistan in Rose Bowl Southampton.
  • The left-arm spinner went on to return the tournament's best bowling figures of 5 for 29 against Afghanistan.
  • Shakib matched Yuvraj Singh's unique World Cup record of scoring 50+ runs and taking 5 wickets in the same World Cup match. Yuvraj had become the first cricketer to do the same in 2011 World Cup against Ireland.
  • Shakib became the first cricketer in World Cup history to score 400+ runs and pick-up 10 wickets in the same tournament. Shakib, currently the highest run-scorer of World Cup 2019 with 476 runs to his name has also picked up 10 wickets in just 6 innings.
  • Shakib also became the first player in the World Cup history to score two centuries and claim two 4 (+) wickets.
  • He became the join third fastest to 1000 ODI runs batting at No. 3. He has taken 21 innings to do the same. England's Jonathon Trott and Scotland's C McLeod had also taken the same number of innings.

Russell Ruled Out of WC

  • West Indies was dealt a severe blow ahead of its crucial match against India after all-rounder Andre Russell was ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup with a knee injury.
  • In the four matches out of six he played in the World Cup, Russell managed just 36 runs at an average of 12.

BJP Gets First ZP in West Bengal

  • The BJP took control of the South Dinajpur Zilla Parishad in West Bengal from the Trinamool, its first in West Bengal, after a majority of the ruling party members, besides an MLA, switched sides.
  • In a jolt to the Trinamool in the district, veteran leader Biplab Mitra also joined the BJP.
  • Mr. Mitra, considered one of the architects of the Trinamool in the district in north Bengal, was shunted out as the party's district president after the Lok Sabha polls.
  • Besides Mr. Mitra and 10 of the 18 members of the South Dinajpur Zilla Parishad, Trinamool MLA Wilson Champramary joined the BJP in Delhi.

TN Urges Centre Not to Grant Green Nod for Mekedatu Dam

  • Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to grant the Terms of Reference (ToR) for environmental clearance for Karnataka's proposed dam at Mekedatu.
  • Karnataka's action of seeking environmental clearance for the Mekedatu project was in utter violation of the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the judgment of the Supreme Court, dated February 16, 2018.
  • The T.N. government conveyed its strong objections to Karnataka's proposal and had asked the Centre to reject outright and return the detailed project report (DPR) for the Mekedatu Dam, which was not a designated reservoir for the release of water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu in terms of the tribunal's final order, as modified by the SC.

  • The government is on its way to integrate all the diplomatic missions and posts into the Passport Seva Project shortly. On the occasion of the Passport Seva Divas, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said that India would soon deliver passport booklets with advanced security features.
  • According to S. Jaishankar, the passport booklets with advance security features were being produced at the India Security Press, Nashik. They would have chips installed for security. The government proposes to pursue the manufacture of e-passports on priority so that a new passport booklet with advanced security features can be rolled out.

TwentiethYear of Kargil War

  • Commemorating 20 years of the Kargil War, the IAF turned the Gwalior air base virtually into a conflict theatre, with dramatic reenactment of some of the milestones of the operation in 1999.
  • In a symbolic recreation of the Tiger Hill attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Drass-Kargil area, the air force used the Mirage 2000 aircraft and explosives were blown up on a 'model hill' to recreate the crucial events of the war. The chief guest for the event is Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa.
  • The IAF planned several activities at the air base to commemorate the 20 years of the war and the symbolic recreation of the Tiger Hill attack was one of them. Five Mirage 2000, two MiG 21s and one Sukoi 30 MKI were on static display at the base.

Madan Lal Saini Passes Away

  • BJP's Rajasthan unit president Madan Lal Saini died in New Delhi. He was shifted from Jaipur to Delhi for treatment of blood-related ailment after being diagnosed with infection in the lungs. Mr. Saini, also a Rajya Sabha MP, was 75.

Lekhi's Debut Novel

  • The death of a scientist on the doorstep of a woman politician in New Delhi, and his last words about a death threat to the Indian Prime Minister, these are the bare bones of a plot for a crime thriller penned by Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP MP from New Delhi, to be out next month.
  • 'The New Delhi Conspiracy', published by Harper Collins, is Ms. Lekhi's first foray into fiction writing and she has co-written the book with Krishna Kumar who works with her. Speaking Ms. Lekhi said that the plot of the story had been with her for a while but that it took a year-and-a-half to finish the novel.
