  •  Nepali journalists demanded immediate withdrawal of a Media Council Bill that aims to curtail press freedom.
  • Nepal has proposed the new Media Bill aimed at imposing a hefty fine of up to Rs. 1 million on media outlets found guilty of damaging anyone's reputation.

US and Mexico Hammer Out Deal

  •  US President Donald Trump announced that he has indefinitely suspended the move to impose escalating tariffs on all imports from Mexico after the latter agreed to take strong measures to prevent migrants from travelling through its area towards the border with the US.

Mastercard and W-GDP Team Up

  • Mastercard and the W-GDP have entered into an agreement to work on three pillars to do with women's empowerment.

Vodafone Idea to Transfer Fibre Assets to Vodafone Towers

  •  Shareholders and creditors of telecom operator Vodafone Idea approved a plan to transfer optical fibre assets to its wholly owned subsidiary Vodafone Towers Limited.
  • The company proposed to transfer its telecom fibre infrastructure to Vodafone Towers before monetising it and approached the National Company Law Tribunal Ahmedabad in April 2019 for its approval.

Barty Defeats Vondrousova

  •  Ashleigh Barty ended Australia's 46-year wait for a French Open singles title defeating Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova in a one-sided women's final.
  • She will be best-ranked Australian woman since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1976.
  • The 19-year-old Vondrousova saw her bid to become the first teenage Grand Slam champion since Maria Sharapova won the 2006 US Open come to a tame end, as the world No. 38 made 22 unforced errors, against a mere 10 winners.

Rafael Nadal Beats Dominic Thiem

  •  Defying the years and one of the most fierce onslaughts he has ever faced at Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal won his 12th French Open crown, leaving Dominic Thiem crushed and a packed Parisian stadium shaking their heads in wonder.
  • The first set had been one for the ages, the second ran it close, but after three hours and one minute all that mattered was that Nadal was once again in familiar pose, flat on his back on the clay, a winner to clinch his 18th Grand Slam triumph in total.

Jagan Team Sworn In

  •  The new State Cabinet consisting of 25 members, including three women, was sworn in at Velagapudi in the Amaravati area.
  • Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Governor E. S. L. Narasimhan administered the oath to them in the presence of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
  • All the candidates except Mekapati Gowtham Reddy (Atukur, Nellore district) and Adimulapu Suresh (Yerragondapalem, Prakasam district) took the oath in Telugu.
  • The duo took the oath in English.

MMRDA Sets Up 24x7 Control Room

  •  With the monsoon round the corner, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has set up a centralised 24x7 control room with helplines to enable residents to alert the authority in case mishaps occur near its project sites.
  • MMRDA engineers and officials will be manning the control room round the clock and working in tandem with civic agencies such as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the Traffic Police, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking and the Mumbai Fire Brigade.

Punjab CM's New Consultative Groups

  •  Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh constituted eight dedicated consultative groups to accelerate the pace of implementation of the State government's flagship programmes.
  • Conspicuously absent from the names of members of the eight groups was Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is yet to take charge of his newly allotted Power Ministry after having been divested of the key Local Government portfolio.
  • Apart from Mr. Sidhu, Medical Education Minister Om Prakash Soni was also not nominated to any of the groups.
  • The groups have been mandated to review and assess the performance of the programmes/schemes so far and give their respective recommendations for further improvements.

Ambala to Get New Police Stations

  •  The Haryana Government decided to set up five new police stations by upgrading existing police posts in Ambala Range for strengthening the law and order and effectively dealing with crime in the state.
  • DGP Manoj Yadava said that the government had also approved 331 posts for the new police stations on which an annual expenditure of over Rs. 14.48 crore would be incurred.
  • Each police station would have five posts of inspectors, 12 sub-inspectors, 24 assistant sub-inspectors, 54 head constables, 216 constables and class IV staff. 

US Approves Sale of Armed Drones

  •  India is only the third country and the first non-NATO member country to have been offered the armed version of Guardian unmanned drones by the United States, the acquisition of which has been under discussion for almost a year now.
  • Technical briefings have taken place and discussion are now focussed on determining the number of drones that India would like to purchase.
  • The only other countries offered the armed drones are the United Kingdom and Italy, both NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) partners of the US.
  • The United States had first offered General Atomics' unarmed MQ-9 Guardian drones for maritime surveillance and approved the sale of 22 of them to India around the time of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's June 2017 visit to Washington for his first meeting with US President Donald Trump.

J&K Bank Government Removes Parvez Ahmad

  •  The Jammu and Kashmir government removed J&K Bank chairman Parvez Ahmad from his post and appointed R. K. Chibber as the interim chairman of the lender.
  • Mr. Chibber was appointed as the interim chairman and director on the board of directors.

Media Awards for Yoga Day Campaigns

  •  The government will award media houses for campaigns on the benefits of yoga ahead of the International Day of Yoga on June 21.
  • The awards are open to media firms operating in 22 Indian languages and English. There are 11 awards each in print, TV and radio categories.

Maldives' Highest Honour Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen

  •  Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Maldives' highest honour "Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen" during his two-day state visit to the country.
  • The prestigious award was presented to Modi by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
  • "The Most Honourable Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen" is the Maldives' highest honour accorded to foreign dignitaries.

Centre to Reintroduce Motor Vehicle Bill

  •  The Centre plans to introduce a fresh draft of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill, which lapsed with the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha in May, in the upcoming session of Parliament. The new draft is expected to address concerns over possible loss of revenue for Regional Transport Offices in the states as a result of a centralised system.
  • The Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill, 2017 aims to usher in reforms in the transport sector and would amend the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. It was passed by the Lok Sabha in 2017, but failed to get the Rajya Sabha approval.

Chaukhandi Stupa to be of National Importance

  •  An ancient Buddhist site in Uttar Pradesh's Sarnath known as Chaukhandi Stupa has been declared to be of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.
  • The government had sought public feedback in March for a period of two months.
