North Korea Urges US to Resume Talks

  •  Four months into the stalled denuclearisation talks between the United States and North Korea following the failed Hanoi summit, Pyongyang has once again urged Washington to reflect upon the correct strategic choice to resume talks before its patience wears down.
  • A spokesperson for North Korea's foreign ministry urged the US to drop its current way of calculation to keep alive the agreement they reached during their first summit in June 2018.
  • The US should duly look back on the past one year and cogitate about which will be a correct strategic choice before it is too late.

Steps to Turn Golden Temple Complex Green

  •  The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which manages the historic Sikh shrines, has taken some initiatives to increase green cover in the Golden Temple complex which is frequented by lakhs of devotees and tourists daily.
  • Just inside the entrance from the Brahm Buta bazaar side, a 'vertical garden' comprising 24,000 plants of different varieties has been developed with the flower pots fixed to the walls.
  • After the Akal Purakh Ki Fauj and other Sikh bodies started plantation on the rooftops of some buildings, the SGPC kicked off a similar drive on the rooftop of Teja Samundri Hall, its administrative building, to create a green cover in and around the complex.
  • As part of the plan, the rooftops will be turned into terrace gardens.

India Backs Dhanauri for International Wetland Tag

  •  The National Capital Region (NCR) may get a second wetland of international importance in Dhanauri, Greater Noida, if India's proposal to declare the 100-hectare wetland a Ramsar site of international importance gets accepted.
  • If accepted by the Ramsar Convention, which is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources, Dhanauri will get legal protection from land use change.
  • There are nine criteria for being accepted as a Ramsar site, including that the site should support vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered species or threatened ecological communities.
  • A wetland can also be considered for the tag if it regularly supports 1% individuals of a species or subspecies of water birds.

Chinese Importers to Apply for Tariff Waivers

  •  Chinese importers are preparing applications for waivers on import tariffs levied on more than 700 US goods in the Sino-U.S trade war, after the finance ministry said that it would start taking submissions. 
  • The Ministry of Finance, earlier in June, posted a list of goods for which waivers could be granted that includes meats such as beef and pork, soybeans, coal and copper scrap. 
  • The waivers are for tariffs imposed in July 2018 on $50 billion worth of US goods in retaliation for similar measures taken by Washington. Beijing has since imposed additional tariffs on thousands of goods as a bitter trade war has escalated.
  • In May, Beijing said that it would start a waiver programme, amid growing worries over the cost of the protracted trade war on its already slowing economy. Other goods on the list include tractors, motorcycles, mountain bikes and some pieces of medical equipment.  

Wipro to Buy ITI

  •  IT major Wipro would acquire U.S.-based International TechneGroup Incorporated for $45 million (around Rs. 312 crore).
  • International TechneGroup Incorporated (ITI) provides Computer Aided Design and Product Lifecycle Management interoperability software services.
  • The acquisition complements Wipro's core strengths in Industry 4.0 and would allow Wipro to offer end-to-end solutions in Digital Engineering and Manufacturing.

JLR Inks Pact with BMW

  •  Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) joined hands with BMW to develop next generation electric drive systems.
  • The collaboration seeks to advance the development of electrification technology to support transition to an autonomous, connected, electric, shared (ACES) future.
  • The two partners would invest jointly in research and development, engineering and procurement with an aim to provide the necessary economies of scale to support increased consumer adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
  • The strategic collaboration would build on the considerable knowledge and expertise in electrification at both the companies.

China Launches Rocket from Ship

  •  China successfully launched a rocket from a ship at sea for the first time, the latest step forward in its ambitious space programme.
  • The Long March 11 rocket blasted off from a platform on a large semi-submersible barge in the Yellow Sea.
  • The small rocket designed to be deployed quickly and from mobile launch sites such as a ship, carried seven satellites, including one that measures sea-surface winds to forecast typhoons.

Infantino Re-elected as FIFA President

  •  Gianni Infantino said that he had turned FIFA into an organisation "synonymous with credibility" as he was re-elected for a second term as president of world football's governing body.
  • It was a formality that Infantino would be waved through for a new four-year mandate, until 2023, as he stood unopposed at the FIFA Congress in Paris.
  • The FIFA Council chose to back his re-election by acclamation, with Infantino now hoping to build on the work he started in February 2016, when he was voted in to succeed the disgraced Sepp Blatter at the head of the organisation.

Haryana Cabinet Relaxes Recruitment Conditions

  •  With state assembly elections barely four months away, the council of ministers in Haryana, relaxed the recruitment conditions in Group B, C and D jobs by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission.
  • The state government is looking to step up its recruitment drive before the model code of conduct is imposed.
  • As per the amendment, the selection and recommendation of candidates for group B posts such as teachers and educational supervisors, in school education department, and Group C and D posts in all departments will be done on the basis of written exam, socio-economic criteria and experience.
  • The scheme of marks in respect of selection to the post will comprise of 100 marks, including 90 for written exam and 10 for socio-economic criteria and experience.

RLD to Fight UP By-polls Alone

  •  A day after the SP and the BSP decided to contest alone all 11 seats in the upcoming assembly by-polls, their third alliance partner in the recent Lok Sabha elections, RLD, announced it too will go solo.
  • Rashtriya Lok Dal UP president Masood Ahmad, however, expressed hope that the gathbandhan remains intact.
  • The UP assembly bypolls will be important for the RLD as it has no representation in the UP Legislative Assembly.
  • In the just concluded Lok Sabha elections, the RLD had contested from three constituencies, but faced defeat on all.

Centre Wants All States to Join PMJAY

  •  Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan urged the Chief Ministers of Delhi, Odisha, Telangana and West Bengal to join the Centre's flagship health protection scheme, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
  • Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that financial resources would be made available to the states with adequate flexibility in the spirit of cooperative federalism.
  • The States would gain from the nationwide network of hospitals and would also help provide services in their own State to those from outside their states.

Actor Dinyar Contractor Passes Away

  •  Veteran actor and theatre legend Dinyar Contractor, who appeared in films such as Baadshah and Khiladi, passed away. He was 79.
  • Dinyar Contractor was a stage actor, comedian and Bollywood/Tollywood actor.
  • He acted in Gujarati theatre and Hindi theatre, as well as Hindi movies. He started acting at school and began his professional career in 1966.

Prakash Pant Passes Away

  •  Uttarakhand minister Prakash Pant died in the US after a prolonged illness.
  • Pant was Uttarakhand's minister for parliamentary affairs and finance besides being in charge of a host of other portfolios.
  • He was a BJP MLA from Pithoragarh in the state assembly and was considered one of the most important and knowledgable members of Rawat's cabinet.

Prayut Chan-O-Cha Elected as PM

  •  Thailand's junta Chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha was elected as the kingdom's first civilian Prime Minister since the 2014 coup he led, in a vote by a parliament stacked with appointed allies of the conservative, arch-royalist army.
  • Prayut swept aside his sole challenger Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit who led the anti-military bloc, garnering 500 votes to his rival's 244.

Apple Design Awards

  •  Celebrating developers and their outstanding work, the Cupertino-based iPhone maker honoured nine winners at the Apple Design Awards during its annual developers' conference WWDC 2019.
  • Some of the winners are:
  • The first winner, Ordia by the London-based Loju team, is an action game where you play as a new life form taking its first leaps into a strange and hazardous world.
  • Flow app by Moleskine is a new take on the digital notebook, designed to make it intuitive to get ideas out of the user's head by drawing, sketching and writing as fast as you can think.
  • The third winner was Gardens Between game app by Australian studio The Voxel Agents. It is a puzzle adventure that follows best friends, Arina and Frendt, as they fall into a mysterious world of beautiful garden islands.
  • The fourth winner was the popular racing video game game Asphalt 9: Legends developed by Gameloft. It is the ninth main installment in the Asphalt series.

PM Constitutes 3 Cabinet Committees

  •  Prime Minister Narendra Modi constituted three high-powered panels to tackle the issues of economic growth, employment and national security.
  • These panels are Cabinet committee on Security, Cabinet Committee on Investment and Growth and Cabinet Committee on Security Employment and Skill Development. 
  • All the three cabinets will be chaired by the Prime Minister.
  • The Cabinet committee on security and the Cabinet committee on Investment and Growth have five members each. The Cabinet committee on Employment and Skill Development has 10 members.
