Pakistan Bans JuD and Its Charity Wing

  •  Pakistan banned the Jamat-ud-Dawa, which is led by 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, and its charity wing Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation, amid intense global pressure to rein in the militant groups following the Pulwama terror attack.
  • The decision to ban these groups was taken during a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Netanyahu's Strongest Challengers form Alliance

  •  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu`s strongest challengers in Israel`s April general election joined forces, a dramatic turn in a race his right-wing Likud Party has been predicted to win easily.
  • In anticipation of the announcement of a new centrist alliance between former military chief Benny Gantz Resilience party and Ex-finance Minister Yair Lapid`s Yesh Atid faction, Netanyahu orchestrated a merger of far-right parties that could help him build a governing coalition after the ballot.
  • Gantz and Lapid agreed on a rotation for the Prime Minister`s post in which Gantz would hold office for the first two and a half years of a new government`s term before Lapid took over.

Giant Tortoise Believed Extinct for 100 Years Found

  •  A living member of species of tortoise not seen in more than 110 years and feared to be extinct has been found in a remote part of the Galápagos island of Fernandina.
  • An adult female Chelonoidis phantasticus, also known as the Fernandina giant tortoise, was spotted by a joint expedition of the Galápagos National Park and the US-based Galapagos Conservancy.
  • Investigators think there may be more members of the species on the island because of tracks and faeces they found.
  • The International Union for Conservation of Nature has the Fernandina giant tortoise listed as critically endangered and possibly extinct.

Jet EGM Takes Nod for Stake Acquisition by Banks

  •  At a general meeting (EGM) the troubled airline Jet Airways failed to discuss its exact financial condition or the way forward and merely restricted itself to discussing and passing resolutions allowing banks to acquire majority stake.
  • The airline is saddled with a bank debt of Rs. 8,200 crore and other dues to vendors, lessors and senior employees. 
  • At the meeting, the company discussed and passed enabling resolutions, allowing banks to acquire majority stake for Rs. 1 and allow them to induct their nominees into the board.

Reliance Capital Invites Nippon Life

  •  Reliance Capital has invited Nippon Life to make an offer to acquire up to 42.88% held by Reliance Capital in Reliance Nippon Life Asset Management, the mutual fund (MF) business of the Anil Ambani Group.
  •  If the transaction goes through, then the entity would also become the largest wholly foreign-owned mutual fund house in India.
  • The development comes amidst various attempts by Mr. Ambani to reduce the huge overall debt of his business group, which is facing cases at the Supreme Court and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). 

NIIT Tech and Microsoft in Collaboration

  •  NIIT Technologies has announced a global collaboration with Microsoft, to accelerate the cloudification of its enterprise clients.
  • The collaboration would focus on the comprehensive cloud needs of enterprises from infrastructure to business applications.
  • Both the companies have concluded a strategic cloud solution provider (CSP) agreement that enables NIIT Technologies to directly manage the entire life cycle for its enterprise customers including commercials and support and deliver integrated end-to-end solutions as a managed service on Azure platform.

Israel Set to Join Elite Lunar Club

  •  Israel`s first spacecraft built to land on the moon was set for launch from Florida on a mission that, if successful, would make the Jewish state only the fourth nation to achieve a controlled touchdown on the lunar surface.
  • The unmanned robotic lander dubbed Beresheet - Hebrew for the biblical phrase "in the beginning" - was due for liftoff atop a Falcon 9 rocket launched by California-based entrepreneur Elon Musk`s SpaceX company from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
  • If all goes according to plan, Beresheet, about the size of a dishwasher, will arrive on the near-side of the moon in mid-April following a two-month journey through 4 million miles (6.5 million km) of space.
  • A flight path directly from the Earth to the moon would cover roughly 240,000 miles (386,242 km).

Hayabusa-2 Touches Down on Asteroid

  •  A Japanese spacecraft touched down on an asteroid in an attempt to collect a sample of rock from the surface.
  • The Hayabusa-2 probe was trying to grab the sample from a pre-chosen site on the asteroid Ryugu.
  • The spacecraft reached asteroid Ryugu in June 2018 after a three-and-a-half-year journey from Earth.
  • It is expected to return to Earth with the rocky material it has grabbed in 2020.
  • Ryugu belongs to a particularly primitive type of space rock known as a C-type. The near-Earth asteroid (NEA) is a relic left over from the early days of our Solar System.

IOC Debars India from Hosting Events

  •  The International Olympic Committee have suspended all Indian applications to host future events and urged international sports federations not to stage competitions in the country after two Pakistanis were denied visas to compete in New Delhi. 
  • The IOC said that the refusal of visas for competitors went against the principles of the Olympic charter relating to discrimination and political interference from the host country.
  • Since becoming aware of the issue, and in spite of intense last-minute efforts and discussions with the Indian government authorities, no solution had been found to allow the Pakistani delegation to enter India in time to compete.
  • As a result, the IOC Executive Board also decided to suspend all discussions with the Indian NOC and government regarding the potential applications for hosting future sports and Olympic-related events in India.
  • The Indian Olympic Association last year laid out an ambitious roadmap to host the Youth Olympics in 2026, the Asian Games in 2030 and the Summer Olympics for the first time in 2032.

EC Allots Symbols to Unrecognised Parties

  •  Twenty-seven registered unrecognised political parties have been allotted symbols ranging from chappals, tea filter and chapati roller to gas stove and phone charger, for the coming Lok Sabha election.
  • The applications of the 27 parties for concession in the allotment of a common symbol to their candidates in the general elections had been accepted by the Commission.

India to Stop Sharing Water

  •  According to Road Transport and Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari, India will use its share of water from the Indus network of rivers that flows through its territory.
  • The Minister's statement coincided with the announcement of implementation of the Shahpur-Kandi dam project in Punjab on the river Ravi.
  • The Government has decided to stop India's share of water which used to flow to Pakistan.
  • The water will be diverted from Eastern Rivers and supplied to people in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

UDP Pulls Out of BJP-led Platform

  •  The United Democratic Party (UDP) of Meghalaya has pulled out of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), a non-Congress platform of regional parties that the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam had formed in May 2016.
  • However, UDP's decision will not impact the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma's National People's Party (NPP) and of which the BJP is a constituent.

Assam Rifles Granted Power to Arrest Anyone

  •  Assam Rifles, deployed along the Myanmar border, has been empowered by the Centre to arrest anyone and search a place without warrant in the border districts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram.
  • According to a Home Ministry notification, an officer of the rank corresponding to that of the lowest rank of members of the Assam Rifles has been given these powers under the Code of Criminal Procedure.
  • Earlier, Assam Rifles was making arrests only in areas where the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act was in effect.
  • Assam Rifles personnel will exercise these powers and discharge their duties under sub-section(1) of section 41, sections 47, 48, 49, 51, 53, 54, 149, 150, 151 and 152 of the Cr PC within the local limits of the area comprised within the border districts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram.

Apache Copter Delivery in July

  •  According to Boeing officials, India will receive the first batch of Apache attack helicopters and one C-17 transport aircraft in July-August 2019. The company also pitched an upgraded version of its F-18 fighter for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Navy's fighter tenders.
  • The 22 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters will be delivered in July and one C-17 strategic transport aircraft in August.

HAL Places Order with French Defence Company

  •  Seeking to boost tactical capabilities of the Indian armed forces, HAL has awarded French aerospace and defence company Thales a contract to supply 135 2.75-inch (70-mm) rocket launchers.
  • Thales's fully certified, field-proven, competitive rocket launchers are suitable for use on both light and combat helicopters.
  • Thales's 2.75-inch (70-mm) rocket launchers are produced using composite material, making them an average of 50 per cent lighter than metal launchers, and eliminating corrosion issues.
  • This new collaboration between Thales and HAL in the field of air-launched weaponry opens up new opportunities for supply of equipment to the Indian armed forces, and consolidates Thales's position in the Indian market

  •  Manoj Yadava, an IPS officer of the 1988 batch, assumed charge as Haryana's Director General of Police (DGP). 
  • According to Mr. Yadava, maintaining law and order was among his priorities as parliamentary elections are around the corner, and will focus on ensuring free, fair and peaceful elections in the State.

Bedi Completes 1000 Days as L-G

  •  Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi completes 1,000 days in office, stated that all decisions taken during her term were in the larger interest of Puducherry and would be the case in future too.
  • She said that not knowing Tamil has been a handicap for her.
  • Ms. Bedi assumed office on Mary 29, 2016.

Asia's First Draft Law on Same-sex Marriage

  •  Taiwan proposed a draft law to allow same-sex marriage in Asia`s first such bill, but the legislation was criticised by rights activists and conservative groups amid a heated debate over marriage equality.
  • Voters opposed marriage equality in a series of referendums in 2018, defining marriage as between a man and a woman and asking for a special law to be enacted for same-sex unions.
  • The draft law unveiled by cabinet would give same-sex couples similar legal protections for marriage as heterosexuals, but marriage in civil law would remain defined as between a man and woman.
  • Taiwan`s parliament is expected to vote on the draft bill by late May, a deadline for legislation set by the constitutional court in May 2017 when it ruled that same-sex couples had the right to legally marry.

UK's New Fellowship Package Open to Indian Students

  •  Indian students and experts will be able to apply for fellowships and places on post-graduate courses in Artificial Intelligence as part of a major government-industry package to meet skills gap in this growing sector.
  • As per reports, the £110 million-government funded package includes 200 new places at the postgraduate level in universities funded by companies such as Deepmind, QuantumBlack, Cisco, BAESystems and Indian IT major Infosys, in collaboration with the Industry of Coding and British Computer Society.
  • The fellowships and places under the package announced by digital secretary Jeremy Wright and business secretary Greg Clark will be open to students and experts from India and other non-EU countries.

Mumbai's First-ever Private University

  •  Mumbai is set to get its first private university, as the Maharashtra cabinet approved a proposal by the Somaiya trusts, which run several educational institutions, to set up a self-financed university.
  • Self-financed universities receive no aids or grants from the state government, and have the freedom to decide their curricula, course structures and fee. The Cabinet's approval means the institutes under the Somaiya group will no longer fall under the University of Mumbai.
  • The Somaiya Vidyavihar University will be run jointly by Somaiya Vidyavihar, KJ Somaiya Trust and The Somaiya Trust.
  • It will include the KJ Somaiya College of Engineering (KJSCE), KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, and five other institutes, at the Vidyavihar campus in Ghatkopar. 

Delhi Government Schools Outperform Private Schools

  •  When the Aam Aadmi Party came to power in February 2015 it made a pledge to bring about far-reaching changes in the education and health sectors.
  • These changes are visible in the nearly 1,000 government schools in the city. The classrooms are cleaner with colourful walls and comfortable benches. Many senior classes boast of projectors, smart boards and air-conditioned labs besides indoor and outdoor sports facilities.
  • The 2018 CBSE Class XII results of the government schools were seen as a feather in the Delhi government's cap.
  • With a 90.68 pass percentage, these schools outperformed not only the private institutions (pass percentage 88.35 per cent) but also the overall pass percentage of 83.01 per cent. This was also the highest pass percentage for Delhi's government schools in one decade.
