MPs Quit Labour Party

  •  A group of MPs from Britain's Opposition Labour Party broke away in protest at leader Jeremy Corbyn's support for Brexit and his failure to stamp out anti-Semitism.
  • The seven MPs included Chuka Umunna, who has led a campaign for a second referendum that could stop Brexit and was once seen as a potential leader of the centre-left party.
  • The seven MPs will form a breakaway independent group in Parliament.
  • Many Labour voters, particularly in northern England, chose to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum — but a majority of Labour MPs and members supported staying in.

 Venezuela Expels European MPs

  •  Venezuela expelled five visiting European lawmakers, an act which Opposition leader Juan Guaidó branded irrational as his showdown with President Nicolás Maduro over the arrival of international aid intensifies.
  • The incident is the latest point of tension between the international community and Mr. Maduro, who is in the grip of a power struggle with Mr. Guaidó.

RBI to Pay Government Interim Surplus

  •  Ending the suspense, the Reserve Bank of India announced that it would transfer Rs. 28,000 crore to the Centre as interim surplus for the half-year ended December 2018.
  • This will take the Centre's total receipts from the RBI as surplus transfer in 2018-19 to Rs. 68,000 crore. The central bank had earlier paid Rs. 40,000 crore to the government as its final share of surplus for 2017-18. The RBI follows July-June accounting year.
  • The interim surplus transferred by the RBI now is crucial to the Centre's ability to meet the revised fiscal deficit target of 3.4% for this fiscal.

IOC Signs Deal to Buy U.S. Crude

  •  In the first-ever deal by an Indian company, Indian Oil Corporation signed an annual deal worth $1.5 billion to import 3 million tonnes of crude oil in the fiscal year beginning April 1.
  • This is the first time any Indian refiner has signed an annual contract, since the country in 2017 began importing crude oil from the U.S.
  • The term contract follows IOC signing up to buy crude oil from the U.S. through a term-tender deal in August 2018.
  • It had, at that time, bought about 6 million barrels of U.S. crude oil under a single tender for delivery between November 2018 and January 2019.
  • This is the first term contract finalised by any Indian PSU oil company for import of U.S. origin crude oil grades.
  • Prior to this, IOC and other state-owned oil firms bought crude oil from the U.S. on a spot or current tender basis which comprised one shipload of oil.

Glenmark Gets USFDA Nod

  •  Glenmark Pharmaceuticals received the final approval from the USFDA for its generic version of clobetasol propionate foam, a steroid used to treat inflammation and itching of skin.
  • The approval has been granted to Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, U.S., for clobetasol propionate foam, 0.05%, a generic version of Olux Foam, 0.05% of Mylan Pharmaceuticals.

Lanka Names Three New Players

  •  Sri Lanka brought in three uncapped players to its 17-member squad for the five-match One-Day International series against South Africa.
  • The three uncapped players are right-hand batsman Oshada Fernando, bowler Kamindu Mendis and all-rounder Priyamal Perera.
  • The series will start on March 3. 

Railways Women Lift National Hockey Title

  •  The Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) were crowned champions for the sixth straight time after they outclassed Madhya Pradesh in the final of the 9th Hockey India senior women Nationals at the Astroturf International Stadium.

Shiv Sena Makes U-turn

  •  Barely 13 months after the Shiv Sena passed a resolution at its national executive to go it alone in all future polls, it made a U-turn by announcing an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • As per the agreement, the BJP will contest 25 out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats, while the Sena will contest 23.
  • Both parties have been together for over 25 years, and even though there have been some misunderstandings in recent times, the original ideology of both parties is the same — Hindutva.

Schedule for MLC Elections

  •  The Election Commission announced the schedule for biennial elections to the Legislative Council as the term of five members, P. Sudhakar Reddy, Mohd. Ali Shabbir (both Congress), T. Santosh Kumar, Mohd. Saleem and Mohd. Mahmood Ali (all TRS), under the Legislative Assembly quota is set to expire by March-end.

Bhopal to Host Indian History Congress

  •  After Savitribai Phule Pune University allegedly backed out, the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh has decided to host the 79th Indian History Congress in Madhya Pradesh beginning February 26.
  • The 79th session was earlier supposed to be held at the SPPU from December 28.
  • This cancellation was unprecedented in the history as the only time Congress session was not held was in times of national need like 'Quit India' movement in 1942 and the wars in 1962 and 1971.
  • In the moment of crisis, the Madhya Pradesh government has come forward to support the IHC. Bhopal's Barkatullah University will be hosting the event.
  • Over 1,000 delegates, including prominent historians, are expected to participate in the IHC in Bhopal.

Ex-President Yameen Arrested

  •  A Maldivian court ordered the arrest of former President Abdulla Yameen on charges of money-laundering.
  • The arrest followed a preliminary hearing into the allegations that Mr. Yameen, termed a strongman by critics and rivals, had taken bribes amounting to $1.5 million, ahead of his re-election bid.
  • He has denied receiving any illicit payment. In December 2018, the court froze his local bank accounts holding $6.5 million.

The Jury's Special Mention Award 

  •  Piyush Pandey, The Hindu's Corporate Editor, has received the IFFCO Indian Institute of Mass Communication Alumni Association (IIMCAA) Jury's Special Mention award in the Economic and Business Reporting category.
  • IIMCAA announced the '3rd IFFCO IIMCAA Awards' during its annual alumni meet at the institute's headquarters in New Delhi.

QR Coded Books in UP Government Schools

  •  The UP Basic Shiksha Parishad has come up with QR code (Quick Response code) in textbooks of English medium schools of government-run schools.
  • The move is aimed at providing digital content related to particular chapters, which could be a short video lecture or 3D tutorial that students can download through their mobile phone.
  • There are nearly 5,000 Parshadiya English medium schools in UP.
  • QR code is a machine-readable code consisting of an array of black and white squares, typically used for storing web-links or other information for reading by the camera on a smart-phone.
  • For this to work, a mobile phone application, 'Diksha', has been developed by the union ministry of human resource development (MHRD) that will help scan the QR code.
