Irish PM Rules Out Changes to Brexit Deal

  •  Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said that he was open to discussing how to save Britain's exit deal with the EU ahead of talks with Theresa May, but repeated that the text itself could not be reopened.
  • Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29 but the House of Commons last month rejected a divorce deal drawn up between Ms. May's government and Brussels. MPs then voted to request that Ms. May renegotiate the Irish "backstop".
  • Mr. Varadkar insisted that the withdrawal agreement and the backstop are not up for negotiation.
  • He repeated that the EU could discuss changes to a statement on future ties. 

Thai Party to Obey Royal Command

  •  Thai Princess Ubolratana's unprecedented attempt to become the country's next Prime Minister was abruptly nixed after her party agreed to comply with a command from the King opposing the plan.
  • The party's announcement, effectively blocking Ubolratana's candidacy, came after an extraordinary rebuke by her brother King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and removes a hurdle for the ruling junta to hold onto power after the March 24 vote.
  • The Thai Raksa Chart party, affiliated with the powerful Shinawatra political clan, had announced the Princess as their candidate.

Withdrawing Trade Benefits for India

  •  As per reports, India could lose a vital US trade concession, under which it enjoys zero tariffs on $5.6 billion of exports to the United States, amid a widening dispute over its trade and investment policies.
  • A move to withdraw the generalised system of preferences (GSP) from India, the world's largest beneficiary of a scheme that has been in force since the 1970s, would be the strongest punitive action since US President Donald Trump took office in 2017 vowing to reduce the US deficit with large economies.
  • Trump has repeatedly called out India for its high tariffs.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has courted foreign investment as part of his Make in India campaign to turn India into a manufacturing hub and deliver jobs to the millions of youth entering the workforce.
  • Trump, for his part, has pushed for US manufacturing to return home as part of his Make America Great Again campaign.

Godrej Properties Signs Six-Project Deal with Solitaire Group

  •  In a major consolidation exercise, leading property developer Godrej Properties Ltd will develop six projects of a Pune builder in what it called an "equity investment platform".
  • The Godrej group firm will develop Solitaire's six projects spread across 300 acres. A Godrej Properties statement to BSE said that the six projects, with a development potential of 25 million sq. ft, include housing projects, plotted development as well as mixed-use and township projects.
  • This is a first-of its-kind equity platform investment, and is in alignment with Godrej Properties' strategy of deepening its presence across leading real estate markets.

Akaash and Sabeena Clinch Titles

  •  Akaash Ashok Kumar of Karnataka and Sabeena Athica of Tamil Nadu emerged the men's and women's champions at the Uniply 29th National Tenpin Bowling Championships at Amoeba.
  • Akaash, for whom this was the maiden National title, defeated second seed Dhruv Sarda of Delhi, while Sabeena clinched her 10th crown with a win over Telangana's Sumathi Nallabantu.

Yonex-Sunrise Senior National Badminton Championships

  •  Top Indian shuttlers will descend upon Guwahati as the sprawling Assamese city is all set to welcome the Yonex-Sunrise 83rd senior National badminton championships to be held from February 10 to 16.
  • Eight players (six in men and two in women) ranked in the top 50 in the BWF World Rankings in singles, will start directly from the pre-quarterfinals.

BSP Calls Off Alliance with INLD

  •  The Bahujan Samaj Party called off its nearly nine-month-old alliance with Haryana's main opposition INLD and announced to forge ties with LSP, an outfit floated by rebel BJP MP Raj Kumar Saini.
  • The development comes days after Om Prakash Chautala-led Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) suffered a humiliating defeat in the Jind bypolls, with party candidate Umed Singh Redhu forfeiting his security deposit.
  • Under the new arrangement, the BSP and the LSP will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and Haryana Assembly polls.
  • In Haryana, the BSP will contest on eight and the LSP on two Lok Sabha seats, Meghraj said.
  • He further said that his party would contest on 35 seats and LSP would on 55 seats during the Haryana Assembly polls.

NPP May Quit NDA

  •  Amid widespread protests across the northeastern region over the contentious Citizenship Bill, National People's Party (NPP) president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma threatened that his party would quit the BJP-led NDA if the proposed legislation was passed in Rajya Sabha.

India Set to Overtake Pakistan

  •  According to Union Minister of Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, India is likely to overtake Pakistan in terms of the number of pilgrims sent for Haj pilgrimage this year.
  • There are two Islamic countries – Indonesia, from where around 2 lakh people participate and then there is Pakistan from where 1,84,000 people participate.
  • As of today, India already has over 1,75,000 participants and is aiming to supersede Pakistan this year.

Dhillon Takes Charge of Chinar Corps

  •  Lt. Gen. Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon has taken over as the 48th Corps Commander of the Army's Srinagar-based strategic 15 Corps, which mans the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.
  • Lt. Gen. Dhillon took over the command of the 15 Corps, also called the Chinar Corps from Lt. Gen. A.K. Bhatt.
  • Lt. Gen. Bhatt has moved to New Delhi as Military Secretary at the Army Headquarters.

  •  World Hindi Day is celebrated on January 10 every year, marking the anniversary of first World Hindi Conference which was held in 1975.
  • The first World Hindi Conference was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
  • World Hindi Day was first observed on January 10, 2006. Since then, it is celebrated on January 10 every year.

PMSYM Pension Scheme

  •  As per a Labour Ministry notification, all unorganised sector workers up to 40 years of age can subscribe to the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PMSYM) scheme, which entails a minimum monthly pension of Rs. 3,000, from February 15.
  • The scheme, announced by Finance Minister Piyush Goyal in the Budget for 2019-20, is targeted at unorganised sector workers with monthly income of up to Rs. 15,000.
  • This Scheme is called the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan, 2019. It shall come into force on the 15th day of February, 2019.
  • The scheme will cover unorganised workers who are working or engaged as home based workers, street vendors, mid-day meal workers, head loaders, brick kiln workers, cobblers, rag pickers, domestic workers, washer men, rickshaw pullers, landless labourers, agricultural workers, construction workers, among others.

SPPU to Start 4 Undergraduate Courses

  •  For the first time ever since the inception of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in the year 1948, the university from the coming academic year will be offering four undergraduate courses in the bachelor of science (BSc) which will be a three year academic programme for students after the completion of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC).
  • The new programmes in the SPPU will be BSc in physics, BSc in chemistry, BSc in environmental science and BSc in the earth and atmospheric science.
  • The batches for each course will have only twenty students.
  • The first two years of the course will have a common programme and in the final year, the students will opt for specialisation.
