Hasina Secured Fourth Term

  •  Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has secured a fourth term with a landslide victory.
  • Hasina's ruling Awami League party and its allies won 288 seats in the 300-seat parliament, and the main opposition secured only six seats.

 Iraq Hinted at Bigger Role in Syria

  •  Iraq's Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said that top security officials from Baghdad had met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, and hinted at a bigger Iraqi role fighting Islamic State militants as U.S. troops withdraw from Syria.
  • Abdul Mahdi said Iraq sought to move beyond its current arrangement with Syria - under which it launches air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syrian territory - but did not got into more details.

Virat Kohli & Co Equal 41-year-old Record

  •  Virat Kohli & Co became the first Indian team in 41 years to win two Test matches in a series against Australia in an away series.
  • It was last witnessed in 1977-78 tour under the captainship of Bishan Singh Bedi.
  • India won the first Test in Adelaide by 31 runs with Australia bouncing back to claim the second in Perth by 146 runs.
  • This win leaves India zeroing in on a first-ever series win in Australia with just the Sydney Test to go.

Bumrah the Highest Wicket-taker

  •  India pacer Jasprit Bumrah finished 2018 as the highest wicket-taker across all formats in the calendar year.
  • The fast bowler, who helped India win the third Test in Melbourne by 137 runs by picking up a nine-wicket haul, took 78 wickets in this year.
  • Bumrah took 48 wickets in 9 Tests, 22 wickets in 13 ODIs and 8 wickets in 8 T20I matches.
  • He went past Kagiso Rabada, who has taken 77 wickets in 2018.

Tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

  •  Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced renaming of three islands of Andaman and Nicobar archipelago as a tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
  • The Ross Island was renamed as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, the Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep and the Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep.
  • All the three islands are major tourist spots.

Fuel for Nuclear Plants

  •  A stockpile of 15,000 tonnes of uranium is required for achieving supply security of fuel for nuclear plants in the country, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has told a parliamentary panel.
  • The panel report, which was tabled before the Lok Sabha in the on-going Parliament session, also recommended that necessary steps should be taken to ensure new uranium mines are opened as soon as possible to reduce the dependance on the imported uranium.
  • Currently, a major portion of domestic production of uranium comes from the Jaduguda mines of Jharkhand.
  • Apart from Jaduguda, uranium reserves are available in Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

  •  The government appointed Sudhir Bhargava as the new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) along with four new Information Commissioners in the Central Information Commission which had been functioning with just three of them as against a sanctioned strength of 11, including the Chief Information Commissioner.

Ban on Opening of New Engineering Institutes Lifted

  •  The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has lifted the ban on opening of new engineering institutes in six states, including Maharashtra, for the coming academic year (2019-20).
  • The ban was introduced in 2018-19 as a stop-gap solution to tackle vacant seats.
