Armenia's PM Bloc Wins

  •  The electoral bloc of Armenia's acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan won a landslide victory in the snap parliamentary elections, which were triggered by the reformist leader seeking to cement his political authority in the post-Soviet country.
  • According to results from 90 per cent of precincts, the bloc led by Pashinyan's Civil Contract Party had 70.45 per cent of the vote, and trailing in distant second place with 8.37 per cent was the Prosperous Armenia Party.

Surviving Great Barrier Reef Corals

  •  Scientists have observed that the Great Barrier Reef corals that survived bleaching in 2016 were more resistant to a second marine heat wave the following year.
  • A study outlines how a process called "ecological memory" emerged in the northernmost reefs during back-to-back heat waves in 2016 and 2017.

Direct Tax Collections Surged

  •  As per the finance ministry, gross direct tax collections surged 15.7 per cent to Rs 6.75 lakh crore for April-November.
  • The net direct tax collections represent 48 per cent of the total budget estimates of direct taxes for financial year 2018-19 (Rs. 11.50 lakh crore).

National Pension System

  •  As per Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the Centre has decided to increase its contribution to the National Pension System (NPS) for the central government employees from 10% to 14% and also made the entire withdrawal amount tax free at the time of retirement.
  • The minimum employee contribution stands at 10%.
  • Under the NPS, the subscriber is eligible to withdraw 60 per cent of the corpus. The remaining 40% of the accumulated fund goes towards annuity.

Signs of Water Found on Asteroid Bennu

  •  NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has discovered ingredients for water on a relatively nearby skyscraper-sized asteroid, a rocky acorn-shaped object that may hold clues to the origins of life on Earth.
  • The probe, on a mission to return samples from the asteroid to Earth for study, was launched in 2016. Bennu, roughly a third of a mile wide, orbits the sun at roughly the same distance as Earth.
  • There is concern among scientists about the possibility of Bennu impacting Earth late in the 22nd century.

Kohli Achieves Rare Feat as Captain

  •  Virat Kohli achieved a rare feat as the captain of the Indian cricket team. Kohli, who represented his nation for the 75th time in Adelaide, became the first Indian skipper to win Tests in Australia, England and South Africa.
  • It also made him the first captain in Asia to win Tests in these three nations. 
  • Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rahul Dravid had also won Tests in England and South Africa.

Lingayat as Separate Religion

  •  The Centre has rejected the Karnataka government's proposal seeking legal recognition for Lingayats as a distinct religion.
  • The Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha, which has been demanding the separate religion status, criticised the Centre for rejecting it. 
  • According to S. M. Jamadar, a former bureaucrat and the Mahasabha secretary, the Centre had assessed even previous recommendations when no such proposals had been sent.
  • The previous petitions were given by private parties and never in the past had the state government sent such a recommendation.

Agni-V Missile Test-fired

  •  India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-V off the Odisha coast.
  • The surface-to-surface missile has a strike range of 5,000 km. The missile was launched from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island in Bhadrak district.
  • The missile developed by the Strategic Forces Command and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is the most advanced in terms of navigation and guidance, warhead and engine. 
  • This was the seventh trial of the Agni-V ballistic missile.

 RBI Chief Resigns

  •  A protracted tiff between the Indian Government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) climaxed when central bank governor Urjit Patel resigned, days before a board meeting where he would have faced intense pressure.
  • Urjit Patel is the fifth RBI governor in independent India to have resigned from his post before his term.

Ex-SBI Chief Appointed as SWIFT India Chairman

  •  SWIFT India appointed ex-SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya as the new chairman of its board.
  • SWIFT India is a joint venture of top Indian public and private sector banks and SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication).
  • Ms. Bhattacharya will succeed former banker M.V. Nair, who is stepping down after completing five years with the company.

New Appointees in Walmart India

  •  U.S. retail major Walmart India appointed Sameer Aggarwal as its chief business officer and Anuj Singh as head - category merchandising.
  • The announcement follows the resignation of executive vice-president and chief operating officer Devendra Chawla.
  • Mr. Chawla had joined Walmart India in July last year from Future Consumer, a part of Kishore Biyani-led Future Group.

  •  December 11, "International Mountain Day", was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003.
  • The General Assembly encouraged the international community to organise events at all levels on that day to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development.
  • International Mountain Day is observed every year with a different theme relevant to sustainable mountain development.
  • FAO is the U.N. organisation mandated to lead observance of International Mountain Day.
  • The theme chosen for the 2018 celebration of International Mountain Day (IMD) is "MountainsMatter".
