Maldives Applies to Rejoin Commonwealth

  •  The Maldives has applied to rejoin the Commonwealth, reversing a policy of isolation under leader Abdulla Yameen.
  • President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, wrote to the 53-member bloc seeking readmission two years after Mr. Yameen pulled the atoll nation out of it.

Listing Norms for Start-ups to Be Relaxed

  •  In a major push to kick-start listing of start-ups in India in a big way, capital markets regulator SEBI has lined up a slew of relaxations for new-age ventures in sectors like e-commerce and data analytics to raise funds and get their shares listed on stock exchanges.
  • The proposals, which are likely to be discussed at SEBI's board meeting this week, also include renaming the 'Institutional Trading Platform' that the regulator had created for such listings as 'Innovators Growth Platform.'

PNB Invites Bids for Two Dozen NPA Accounts

  •  Public sector lender Punjab National Bank (PNB) has put up for sale two dozen non-performing assets (NPAs) to recover dues of over Rs. 1,779 crore.
  • These 24 due loan accounts are majorly concentrated in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata zones of the bank.

Navy on a Major Capability Upgrade

  •  Against the backdrop of increasing responsibilities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) with the rising Chinese presence, the Indian Navy has embarked on a major capability upgrade. 
  • According to a Navy officer, this year, on an average, 35 Navy ships were deployed every day.
  • The Navy has undertaken 113 port calls including operational turnarounds this year and has participated in 21 exercises including the Indra series with Russia.

Shalindra Kumar to Take Charge as J&K CEO

  •  Shalindra Kumar will take over as the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir, replacing the incumbent Shaleen Kabra, a day after the completion of the ongoing nine-phased panchayat polls in the State.
  • After a gap of seven years, the panchayat elections in the State began on November 17.

Human Rights Day

  •  Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on 10 December every year.
  • The date was chosen to honour the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights and one of the first major achievements of the new United Nations.
  •  The formal establishment of Human Rights Day occurred at the 317th Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on 4 December 1950, when the General Assembly declared resolution 423(V), inviting all member states and any other interested organisation to celebrate the day as they saw fit.

  •  India's Manushi Chhillar, who won the Miss World pageant last year, passed the baton to Mexico's Vanessa Ponce De Leon.
  • The first runner-up title went to Thailand's representative.Femina Miss India 2018 Anukreethy Vas failed to make it even to the top 12.
