India to Retain Top Position in Remittances

  •  According to a World Bank report, India will retain its position as the world's top recipient of remittances this year with its diaspora sending a whopping US$80 billion back home.
  • India is followed by China (US$67 billion), Mexico and the Philippines (US$34 billion each) and Egypt (US$26 billion), according to the global lender.
  • The bank estimates that officially recorded remittances to developing countries will increase by 10.8% to reach US$528 billion in 2018.
  • This new record level follows a robust growth of 7.8% in 2017.

Preferred Investment Destination for Indians

  •  Dubai has emerged as a preferred real estate investment destination for Indians looking for reasonable returns.
  • As per statistics issued by the Department of Real Estate Studies & Research, Dubai Land Department, Indian nationals alone have invested Rs. 16,800 crore in Dubai's real estate in the first nine months of 2018.

Uber Files Initial Public Offering

  •  Uber Technologies Inc has filed paperwork for an initial public offering, taking a step closer to a key milestone for one of the most closely watched and controversial companies in Silicon Valley.
  • The ride-hailing company filed the confidential paperwork in lock-step with its smaller US rival, Lyft Inc, which also announced that it had filed for an IPO.
  • The simultaneous filings extend the protracted battle between Uber and Lyft.

China to Uncover Moon's Dark Side

  •  China launched a rover destined to land on the far side of the moon, a global first that would boost Beijing's ambitions to become a space superpower.
  • The Chang'e-4 lunar probe mission, named after the moon goddess in Chinese mythology, was launched on a Long March 3B rocket from the southwestern Xichang launch centre.
  • Chang'e-4 is humanity's first probe to land on and explore the far side of the moon.

India and China to Resume Military Drills

  •  India and China will resume their joint military drills after a one-year gap in the south-west Chinese city of Chengdu to improve capabilities in fighting terrorism and promote mutual understanding.
  • Each side will send 100 troops to take part in the 7th India and China joint military exercises-  'Hand in Hand'- which will focuss on counter-terrorism operations.

Combined Guided Firing Conducted

  •  In a first-of-its-kind exercise code-named CROSS BOW-18, the Indian Air Force successfully conducted combined guided weapons firing of surface-to-air missiles from the Air Force Station at Suryalanka in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The CROSS BOW-18 saw the successful firing of four different classes of missiles like Akash, Spyder, OSA-AK-M and IGLA.

 Meng Wanzhou Accused of Fraud

  •  Huawei CFO, Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Canada has been accused of fraud with a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.
  • Meng, daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, allegedly allowed the company's subsidiary SkyCom to do business in Iran, thereby violating US sanctions against the country.
  • Huawei reportedly also received several warnings over violating Iranian sanctions.
