America turned into a net oil exporter last week, breaking almost 75 years of continued dependence on foreign oil and marking a pivotal moment toward what US President Donald Trump has branded as 'energy independence.'
The shift to net exports is the dramatic result of an unprecedented boom in American oil production, with thousands of wells pumping from the Permian region of Texas and New Mexico to the Bakken in North Dakota to the Marcellus in Pennsylvania.
Current Account Deficit Widened
According to the Reserve Bank of India, the current account deficit (CA) widened to 2.9% of GDP for the July-September quarter due to higher trade deficit compared with 1.1% during the same period of the previous year.

A breakaway faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), led by Khango Konyak, has decided to revoke its decision of unilaterally abrogating the ceasefire agreement with the Union government with immediate effect.
The chairman and general secretary of the NSCN(K) faction, Konyak and Isak Sumi, says that the outfit is resolved to revoke the unilateral decision after holding wide consultations with NGOs and civil society groups of Nagaland in the past one month.
The NSCN(K) had signed ceasefire with the Centre in 2001 but unilaterally abrogated it in March 2015 when the then chairman of the group, S.S. Khaplang, was alive.
Voter Turnout in Assembly Elections
As per the Election Commission, a voter turnout of 72.62 per cent was recorded in the assembly elections in Rajasthan while in Telangana, the figure was 67 per cent.

Merkel to Pass Torch to a New Party Leader
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will hand over the leadership of her party after nearly two decades at the helm, with the race wide open between a loyal deputy and a longtime rival.
The contest's outcome is expected to be crucial in deciding whether Ms. Merkel, Europe's most influential leader, can realise her stated goal of completing her fourth term in 2021 and before leaving politics.
Ms. Merkel is quitting the helm of her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) after a series of poll setbacks rooted in controversy over her liberal refugee policy.
Ms. Merkel has led Germany since 2005, and moved the party and the country steadily toward the political centre.
The Union Cabinet approved the Agricultural Export Policy, 2018. The policy is aimed at doubling agricultural exports from the current level of $30 billion by 2022 and increasing them to $100 billion in the next few years thereafter.
As per the policy, this is to be achieved through a diversification of the export basket including indigenous, organic and ethnic exports.
The export push will be aided by institutional mechanisms to ease market access and non-tariff barriers.
The Smita Patil International Film Festival, Pune (SPIFF), which aims to showcase short films and documentaries from across the world and promotes storytellers, will be held on December 8 and 9, 2018.
Started in 2012, this year marks the seventh year of the festival and in its current edition it has received more than 1,000 films from 60 countries and only 60 films have been selected for screening.
Military Literature Festival Inaugurated
A three-day (December 7-9) annual military literature festival kicked off with hundreds of schoolchildren, military historians from India and abroad, authors, and serving and retired military personnel in attendance.
This is the second edition of the festival, the first one was held last year.
Punjab Governor V. P. S. Badnore inaugurated the festival.
