Goodbye to UN Migration Agreement

The Austrian government decided to withdraw from the new migration pact of the United Nations. The U.S., Hungary, the Czech Republic and most recently Australia and Poland, had done the same, and it is not a coincidence that politics in most of these countries is dominated by right-wing leaders.
The UN's Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migrations is aiming to make migration all over the world safer. "We view some points of the migration pact as very critical, such as the mixing up of seeking protection with labour migration," said Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. The Chancellor also said Austria's "sovereign migration policy" is endangered by the pact. Since Mr. Kurz's government, consisting of his Conservative Party and the far-right Freedom Party, came to power a year ago, several controversial policies have been adapted.

Bahrain Votes for New Parliament

Polls opened in Bahrain to elect a new Parliament, but absent from the ballot was the country's Shiite-dominated Opposition, whose prominent figures are serving prison sentences. Up for grabs are 40 seats in the lower house of Parliament and 30 municipal council seats.

Mary Kom's Sixth Title in the World

M.C. Mary Kom's claimed her sixth title in the World women's boxing championships at Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex.
Marry defeated Hanna Okhota of Ukraine in the 48 kg final to take her first gold medal after eight years. This was her second World crown on home soil and second in light flyweight.
With six gold medals and a silver, the diminutive Mary now stands as the tallest woman boxer in the 17-year-old history of the event and equals legendary male boxer Cuban Felix Savon's World championships record.

Syed Modi International World Tour Super 300

Three-time winner Saina Nehwal and reigning champion Sameer Verma are a step away from clinching the men's and women's singles titles respectively, reaching the finals of the Syed Modi International World Tour Super 300.
Third seed Sameer defeated Indonesia's Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the men's singles semifinals. The World No. 16 Indian will face sixth seeded Chinese Lu Guangzu in the summit clash.
Saina, seeded second, prevailed over Indonesian Ruselli Hartawan to set up a clash with China's Han Yue, who defeated compatriot Li Xuerui in another semifinal.

Centre Looks Abroad for Ideas

The Centre is in talks with experts from Germany, Laos, Austria and Egypt, among others, to evolve a Ganga River Basin Management Plan.
Though it already has a preliminary draft from a consortium of seven IITs, it is in the process of soliciting wider consultation from countries that have such river basin management plans.

Vice-President to Lay Stone for Corridor

Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu will lay the foundation stone for the construction of the visa-free corridor from the Indian side to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan on November 26.
Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari and Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh will be present.
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is expected to perform the ground-breaking ceremony for construction work on its side of the border on November 28.
