Myanmar Rejects UN Findings on Genocide

Myanmar rejected the findings of a UN investigation alleging genocide by its military against the Rohingya, after the U.S. and other countries joined growing calls for them to face justice. The UN probe detailed evidence of genocide and crimes against humanity "perpetrated on a massive scale" against the Rohingya.
Government spokesman Zaw Htay said that we didn't allow the FFM (the UN Fact-Finding Mission) to enter into Myanmar, that's why we don't agree and accept any resolutions made by the Human Rights Council.

Astronaut Quits NASA Training

As per the US space agency, for the first time in five decades, a NASA astronaut candidate has resigned from training.
It's not an easy gig to get -- some 18,000 people routinely seek the 12 spots that open each year.
Kulin, who joined his class sounding upbeat, is the first would-be astronaut to leave training since a resignation in 1968.

Principal Financial Acquires PNB Stake in AMC

Principal Financial Group has completed the acquisition of Punjab National Bank's stake in Principal PNB Asset Management Company, thereby giving the U.S.-based financial services group the complete ownership of the mutual fund entity.

Rise in Outlay for Postal Bank

The Cabinet approved an increase of 79.3% in the project outlay for setting up the India Post Payments Bank to Rs. 1,435 crore. The move comes three days ahead of the nationwide roll-out of the payment bank by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The additional sum of Rs. 635 crore in the revised cost estimates is on account of Rs. 400 crore for technology costs and Rs. 235 crore for human resource expenses.

India's Wettest Place

This year Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra pipped Cherrapunji to become the wettest place in India.
Between June 1 and August 28, the erstwhile wettest place on earth in Meghalaya got 4,730.2 mm rainfall as compared to 6,960 mm in the same period last year.
Mahabaleshwar, which falls in the hilly terrain of Western Ghats so far has received 5,619 mm rainfall, about 100 mm more than what it got in the entire season in 2017.

Three New Districts in Arunachal Pradesh

The Arunachal Pradesh Assembly passed a Bill for the creation of three new districts, Pakke-Kesang, Lepa Rada and Shi Yomi - in the State. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein had introduced the Arunachal Pradesh Re-Organisation of Districts (Amendment) Bill, 2018, in the House. The Assembly passed the Bill by voice vote.

AFSPA Extended in Assam

The Assam government extended application of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in the state for six more months with immediate effect.
The Act gives special rights and immunity to security forces in carrying out various operations in disturbed areas.
