WHO Approves Oral Bedaquiline

The World Health Organisation (WHO) for the first time recommended the new oral anti-tuberculosis (TB) drug Bedaquiline as the frontline medicine for treatment of all multi-drug-resistant (MDR) TB cases. Earlier, the drug was recommended only for patients with extremely drug-resistant (XDR) cases, for whom all other medicines had failed.

Taiwan Improves Missiles to Counter China

As per reports, Taiwan is responding to China's arms buildup by developing missiles and interceptors of its own that could reduce Beijing's military advantage over the self-ruled island.
Since President Tsai Ing-wen took office in 2016, Taiwan has deployed one set of missiles, perfected another and sped production of a third.

Imran Khan Defeats Shahbaz Sharif

Imran Khan defeated Shahbaz Sharif in a one-sided contest to become Pakistan's next prime minister after the grand opposition alliance fell apart over the PML-N chief's nomination for the top post.
The election in the 15th National Assembly became just a formality after the Pakistan Peoples Party, led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari with 54 seats abstained from voting.
Khan the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), secured 176 votes while his only rival and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Sharif got 96 votes.

India Bans Petcoke Import

India banned the import of petcoke for use as fuel, but allowed select shipments for use as feedstock in certain industries.
Import of petcoke is allowed only for cement, lime kiln, calcium carbide and gasification industries, when used as the feedstock or in the manufacturing process on actual user condition.

TruJet and Jet in Talks to Sub-lease Planes

Beleaguered Jet Airways is in an advanced stage of discussions with TruJet to sub-lease up to seven of its ATR planes to the regional airline as it seeks to reduce costs and mop up additional revenues. These planes are likely to be sub-leased with complete crew, maintenance and insurance.

GAIL Seeks Foray into Solar Power Plants

State-owned GAIL India has sought shareholder nod to amend the charter of the company to invest in start-ups, build solar power plants and set up battery charging stations for electric vehicles as it looks to diversify its portfolio beyond gas and petrochemicals.
The nation's biggest natural gas transporting and marketing company wants to insert six new sections in the main objects clause of the memorandum of association of the company.

ISRO's First Mission to Study the Sun

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to study the Sun through its Aditya-L1 satellite which will be inserted in a halo orbit, which is 1.5 million km from the Earth during 2019-2020.
Aditya-L1 will be launched by PSLV-XL from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The satellite will carry six payloads with enhanced science scope and objectives to ensure a detailed study of the Sun.
