Abdul Rashid Dostum Returns

Afghan Vice-President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum arrived in Kabul, after weeks of widespread protests in the country's north, his traditional bastion, demanding that the government allows the self-exiled leader to return. Gen. Dostum, an ethnic Uzbek veteran of Afghanistan's wars and politics, left the country last year amid allegations of sexual abuse and torture.

Kurds eye Decentralised Syria in Talks

A U.S.-backed Kurdish-led alliance is seeking a roadmap for a decentralised Syria in talks with the government which opened in Damascus this week.
The Syrian Democratic Forces alliance, which controls a swathe of the north and the northeast, said it had agreed with the government to form joint committees to discuss the major issues after a first round of talks.

Century's Longest Lunar Eclipse

Skywatchers around the world have witnessed the longest "blood moon" eclipse of the 21st Century.
The "totality" period, where light from the Moon was totally obscured, lasted for one hour, 43 minutes.
At least part of the eclipse was visible from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, most of Asia and South America.
Over the coming days, Mars will be at its closest point to Earth since 2003 - visible as a "bright red star" where skies are clear.

Sirpur Paper Mills Gets New Lease of Life

Almost four years after the machinery fell silent, the Nizam-era enterprise Sirpur Paper Mills (SPM), is set to throb back to life with the National Company Law Tribunal's Hyderabad Bench approving a resolution plan submitted by JK Paper.
Making this happen for the integrated paper and pulp mill, established in 1936 by the Nizam of Hyderabad, is the modern-day Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and the corporate debt resolution mechanism.

Special Consultative Status to Punjab NGO

Punjab based non-profit organisation Patiala Foundation has been accorded "Special Consultative Status" by the United Nations. The recognition confers a set of privileges on the NGO, which has been working in the field of livelihood, tourism and road safety. So far, 3,974 NGOs in the globe have received the recognition.

Holes in Data Protection Bill

While the draft Bill for protection of personal data of Indian citizens has been welcomed as a positive start, it is not without loopholes, according to various stakeholders who have called for an in-depth consultative process before the Bill becomes a law.
An expert panel headed by Justice B.N. Srikrishna, on Friday, submitted its report on data protection as well as the draft 'The Personal Data Protection Bill, 2018' after year-long consultations.

Made in India Tank Engines

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman handed over two fully indigenous battle tank engines produced by the Engine Factory Avadi (EFA), a unit of Ordnance Factory Board, to Vice-Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Devraj Anbu.
The engines, V-46-6 and V92S2, power the T-72 Ajeya and the T-90 Bhishma tanks.
