UK Foreign Secretary Resigns

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson quit over Prime Minister Theresa May's plans to leave the European Union, the second resignation in a day, leaving the British leader's Brexit plans in crisis. The two resignations (David Davis and Boris Johnson) leave May badly exposed at the top of a government unable to unite over Britain's biggest foreign and trading policy shift in almost half a century.

China Launches Two Satellites for Pakistan

China successfully launched two remote sensing satellites for its "all-weather" ally Pakistan, which will also help the two countries monitor progress as they build the strategic USD 50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The launch of the two satellites marks yet another space cooperation between China and Pakistan since the launch of PAKSAT-1R, a communication satellite, in August 2011. The satellites, PRSS-1 and PakTES-1A, were launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China using a Long March-2C rocket, staterun Xinhua. The PRSS-1 is China's first optical remote sensing satellite sold to Pakistan.

China Reduces Tariff on Indian Cancer Drugs

India and China have reached an agreement on reduction of tariffs on the import of Indian medicines, particularly cancer drugs, to China. However, it is not yet clear whether China has agreed to grant licenses to Indian companies to sell cancer drugs.

Indian cancer-curing medicines are in big demand in China as they are far cheaper than those from western countries.

DRDO to Engage Firms for Border Surveillance System

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is looking towards the industry for commercial production and marketing of a Border Surveillance system (BOSS) developed by it. DRDO is looking at transferring the technology to interested parties, both in private and public sector, that can manufacture the system.

BOSS can be deployed at unmanned observations posts for remote controlled all- weather day-and-night monitoring of designated areas. It consists of a battlefield surveillance radar along with electro-optical sensors.

DoT Clears Vodafone-Idea Merger

The Department of Telecom (DoT) approved the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular but with the condition that the acquirer would have to pay over Rs. 13,500 crore as deferred liabilities. The order said that M/s Idea Cellular Ltd. shall replace Bank Guarantees by M/s VML and VIL towards the annual instalments in respect of the spectrum bought in auctions held in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Michael Ondaatje Wins Special One-off Golden Man Booker Prize

Sri Lanka born Canadian literary icon Michael Ondaatje's "The English Patient" has won the special one-off Golden Man Booker Prize to mark the 50th anniversary of the prestigious literary award. The English Patient's is a tale of love and conflict during World War II.

SC upholds Dealth Penalty for Nirbhaya Convicts

The Supreme court dismissed the petitions of the convicts in Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, and upheld the death penalty given to them. The court also rejected the petitioners' plea for abolition of capital punishment. According to CJI Dipak Misra, the petitions didn't disclose any grounds for invoking its review jurisdiction under Article 137.

The Bench had reserved its order in May after hearing the counsel for three review petitioners and special public prosecutor Siddharth Luthra.

Bio-Ethanol Project to Curb Stubble Burning in Punjab

To curb stubble burning and create a positive atmosphere for industrialisation, the Punjab state government has taken a decision to set up a bio-ethanol project. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Punjab Government, and SAB Industries Ltd.

No Friday Prayers at Taj Mahal for Agra Non-Residents

People, who are not residents of Agra, would not be allowed to enter a mosque located inside the Taj Mahal complex, to offer Friday prayers, as per the Supreme Court order, saying the monument was one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and it cannot be "decimated". A Bench of Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan observed that there were several other mosques in Agra and the non-residents could offer the customary prayers there.
