Antarctic Ice Melting Faster Than Ever

Satellites monitoring the state of the White Continent indicate some 200 billion tonnes a year are now being lost to the ocean as a result of melting.

This is pushing up global sea levels by 0.6mm annually - a three-fold increase since 2012 when the last such assessment was undertaken.
According to researchers, the losses are occurring predominantly in the West of the continent, where warm waters are getting under and melting the fronts of glaciers that terminate in the ocean.

Amazon Unveils Loan Network

Amazon India unveiled its 'Seller Lending Network,' further scaling its 'Seller Lending program' introduced in 2016. This would offer sellers on Amazon.in loan options from multiple third-party lenders.

The network would provide wider selection, wherein sellers can choose loan offers tailored for their business needs from multiple lenders and loan types.

Cut in Viability Ratings of SBI and Bank of Baroda

Ratings agency Fitch has downgraded viability ratings of State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda by a notch to 'bb+' and 'bb' respectively citing the lenders' weakened risk profile due to poor asset quality and the vulnerability of their capital buffers to moderate shocks.

Munoth Industries to Set Up Lithium-ion Cell Plant

Chennai-based Munoth Industries announced the setting up of a Lithium-ion cell manufacturing plant, said to be the first in India, at an investment of Rs. 799 crore. The plant, which would target the mobile phone industry in the first phase, would come up in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

New Zealand's Amelia Kerr Hits World Record

Amelia Kerr scored a sumptuous 232 not out off 145 balls as she racked up the highest ever individual score in women's One Day Internationals (ODI), against Ireland Women's Cricket team in the third ODI at Dublin. Kerr surpassed the 21-year old highest score record of 229 previously held by Belinda Clark.

Spain Sacks National Football Team Coach

The head of the Spanish football federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales said that Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has been sacked, two days before their opening World Cup match against Portugal.

His dismissal came after Real Madrid unexpectedly announced that Lopetegui, who had only recently extended his contract with Spain, would take over as their coach next season.

Seat Sharing Deal to Take on BJP

The opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh seem to have finalised seat sharing formula for 2019 Lok Sabha elections in the state.

As per reports, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) will contest on 30 seats each, the Congress is likely to field its candidates on 10 Lok Sabha seats.
Of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, the remaining 10 is likely to be distributed among smaller parties like the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

Advika Jha Set to Fly IAF Jet

After Bhawana Kanth, one among the first women fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force, another woman from Bihar, Advika Jha, is set to make the state and the country proud of her achievement. Advika has been selected as a pilot by the Indian Air Force for Short Service Commission for Women.

Advika Jha will undergo training for one and a half years, following which she is expected to fly fighter jets and cargo plane of the Indian Air Force.
