Trump Vows to End War Drills with Seoul

Donald Trump rocked East Asia with the stunning announcement that he was halting annual U.S.-South Korean military drills and wants to remove the 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in the South as a deterrent against North Korea.

Trump Kim Agreement

President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new US-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Trump confirmed that the sanctions imposed on North Korea will remain in place until North Korea denuclearizes, and said that they would even increase if diplomatic discussions did not progress positively.

World Day against Child Labour

The World Day against Child Labour is observed annually across the world on June 12, 2018 with an aim to raise awareness against child labour.

The International Labour Organisation launched this day in 2002 to tackle the global issue of child labour.

TCS Expands M&G Prudential Pact

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has expanded its agreement with M&G Prudential, the U.K. and European savings and investments business of Prudential Plc, a move which will add £500 million ($668 million) revenue over the term of the contract, taking the deal value to more than $1.2 billion.

Industrial Output Expands in April

As per official data, industrial activity expanded by 4.86% in April driven mainly by a surge in the manufacturing and mining sectors.

YES Bank Reappoints Kapoor

Rana Kapoor has been reappointed as MD & CEO of YES bank for a further period of three years effective September 1, 2018. The reappointment was one of the thirteen resolutions approved by the shareholders and is subject to final approval by the RBI.

The meeting also saw the appointment of Subhash Chander Kalia as non-executive non-independent director, and Rentala Chandrashekhar and Pratima Sheory as independent directors for a period of five years.

Indian Scientists Discover Distant Planet

A team from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, has spotted for the first time a distant planet six times bigger than Earth and revolving around a sun-like star about 600 light years away. Both the planet and the star have been named EPIC.

With this discovery India has joined a handful of countries which have discovered planets around stars.
EPIC 211945201b (or K2-236b) is the name given to the planet by the discovery team. The host star is named EPIC 211945201 or K2-236.

Polly Umrigar Award

India captain Virat Kohli received the Polly Umrigar Award for being the best international cricketer for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons at the annual BCCI awards.

Smriti Mandhana was named the international cricketer of the year 2017-18 in the women's category while Harmanpreet Kaur received the player of the year for her phenomenal performances in the 2016-17 season.

Army Test-fires Smerch Rockets

In yet another boost to the Indian Army, the Smerch guided missile-cum-multi barrel rockets successfully hit targets around 90 kilometres away to clear the trial.

They are developed jointly by India and Russia. Two versions of the Smerch - 9MMF and 9.55K - were test-fired.

India to Get Six Apache Attack Helicopters

In a big boost for India's defensive capabilities, the US State Department approved the sale of six Boeing AH-64E Apache helicopters.

The Apache is manufactured by Boeing - a company that is now in partnership with TATA to manufacture the helicopters in India.
Apart from the attack helicopter, the US State Department also approved sale of four AN/APG-78 Fire Control Radars, 180 AGM-114L-3 Hellfire Longbow missiles, 90 AGM-114R-3 Hellfire II missiles, 200 Stinger Block I-92H missiles, Embedded GPS Inertial Navigation Systems, 30mm cannons, transponders, simulators, training equipment etc. The total cost of the deal is around $930 million.

Government Launches 5000 Wi-Fi Choupals

The Union Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeITY) launched 5000 Wi-Fi Choupals in villages in partnership with common service centres (CSCs). It was jointly inaugurated by Union Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi.

The aim of Wi-Fi Choupals is to transform rural Internet connectivity through BharatNet. They focus on developing rural Wi-Fi infrastructure and to host suitable applications to provide various ICT services at an affordable cost. They will provide 60,000 WiFi hotspots in rural areas enabling people effective Internet access for their various digital processes. Wi-Fi Choupals are in addition to broadband connectivity provided to gram panchayats through optical fibre network under BharatNet.
BharatNet is Centre's rural internet connectivity programme which is implemented by Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL). It is world's largest rural broadband connectivity programme using Optical fibre.
