Germany Finalising Deal to Buy 1st Weapons

Germany is close to finalising a deal that will see the country buy its first weapons-capable drone aircraft, an Israeli designed model, from European aerospace giant Airbus.

The deal is worth nearly €900 million, including training costs.

Lankan Parliament Prorogued

As per reports, President Maithripala Sirisena has temporarily suspended the Sri Lankan Parliament till May 8.

He has given no reason for the move.
The move comes a week after some Opposition legislators backing former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Parliament, along with 16 of Mr. Sirisena's supporters, failed to secure a majority in the House, after mooting a no-faith vote targeting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Accusing the Prime Minister of failing to prevent a massive scandal at the Central Bank, the no-confidence motion demanded that he resign. Mr. Wickremesinghe defeated the motion.

Sharif's Party Rejects Ruling

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the ruling party, rejected the Supreme Court's decision to ban former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from office for life.

As per Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, this is political victimisation. It will be remembered as one of the most controversial rulings by the Supreme Court.
Mr. Sharif was disqualified in July after a probe ordered by the Supreme Court on Panama Papers found him guilty of not disclosing money from his son Hussain Nawaz's company in Dubai.

DCM Shriram Forays into Defence Sector

DCM Shriram Industries Ltd. (DSIL) made its foray into defence equipment manufacturing with the roll out of Zebu, a Light Bullet Proof Vehicle (LBPV) capable of operating across terrains.

Apart from catering to domestic market demands, DSIL planned to export the equipment.
DCM decided to foray into the defence equipment manufacturing space after the announcement of the Defence Procurement Procedure 2016 by the Centre.

RIL to Buy AI-driven Embibe

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has agreed to buy 72.69% stake in the artificial intelligence (AI)-based education platform Indiavidual Learning Pvt. Ltd. ("Embibe").

Embibe leverages data analytics to deliver personalised learning outcomes to each student.
RIL has agreed to invest up to rupee equivalent of $180 million into Embibe (including consideration to be paid for acquiring majority stake from existing investors) over the next three years.

Ashok Leyland Bags Defence Order

Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja Group and one of the largest suppliers of mobility solutions to the Indian Army, has won an order from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for supplying high mobility 10x10 vehicles that will carry Smerch rockets.

The initial order is worth more than Rs. 100 crore.

MC Mary Kom won the gold medal in the women's 45-48 kg category at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, 2018 in Gold Coast.

She beat Northern Ireland's Kristina O'Hara.

Sampanna Ramesh Shelar Creates History

Pune-based swimmer Sampanna Ramesh Shelar created the world record by becoming the first person to swim to and fro from Saint Martin's Island Jetty to Teknaf in Bangladesh also known as the Bangla Channel.

Shelar is now planning to participate in the upcoming swimming competition to be held in Bhagirathi River for 81 km.
