Orban's Party Records landslide Win

  • Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's election triumph delighted other nationalists but sent a chill through civil society groups and portended fresh battles with Brussels.
  • After a campaign centred on resistance to immigration and trumpeting a strong economy, near-complete results showed that Mr. Orban's Fidesz Party snapped up almost half the vote (48.8%).
  • This will give it a two-thirds majority in Parliament and a legislative carte blanche to pursue his transformation of the central European country into what he calls an "illiberal democracy".

Bank of India to Wind up Dubai Office

  • Bank of India (BoI) will wind up its representative office in Dubai. The proposal has been approved by the central bank of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • BoI did not disclose the reason for the move which comes in the backdrop of the Centre's plans to consolidate overseas operations of public sector banks (PSBs).
  • PSB have about 165 overseas branches besides subsidiaries, joint ventures and representative offices.

Xiaomi Opens Smartphone Units in India

  • China's technology firm Xiaomi has set up three new smartphone manufacturing units in India, taking the total number of units to six in the country.
  • The firm is also hosting its global component suppliers to showcase opportunities in India. These suppliers could potentially bring in as much as Rs. 15,000 crore in investment while creating as many as 50,000 jobs.

EESL and BRPL Tie up to Promote Energy Efficiency

  • State-owned Energy Efficiency Services (EESL) and BSES Rajdhani Power (BRPL) have entered into a strategic partnership to promote energy efficiency and renewables among over 24 lakh consumers in South and West Delhi.
  • The scope of this association will cover developing technologies like solar power, roof top solar, smart meters, electric vehicles (EV) / charging stations, solar irrigation pumps and energy storage solutions.

  • India's badminton team won their 10th gold at the Commonwealth Games beating Malaysia.
  • India's men's team won the gold in table tennis.
  • Indian shooting ace Jitu Rai claimed the gold medal in men's 10m air pistol event by creating a new games record while compatriot Om Prakash Mitharval bagged a bronze.

Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport Breaks into World's Busiest Airports

  • New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport has jumped six notches to break into the league of the top 20 busiest airports in the world for 2017 in terms of traffic volumes.
  • As per Airports Council International, the GMR-group-run New Delhi airport jumped from 22nd rank in 2016 to 16th rank, solidifying its status as one of the fastest growing airports in the world for passenger traffic.

Indian Soldiers to Don Bullet Proof Jackets

  • Indian soldiers will soon wear indigenously developed bullet proof jackets for360-degree protection in combat situations, including safety from hard steel core bullets. In an effort to give impetus to Centre's 'Make in India' initiative, the Defence Ministry has signed a contract with a defence firm for procurement of 1.86 lakh bullet proof jackets for the Army at a cost of Rs. 639 crore.
  • The contract was awarded to indigenous defence manufacturer SMPP Pvt Ltd.
  • The new jackets will have 'boron carbide ceramic', the lightest material for ballistic protection.

Roots Corporation Gets New MD and CEO

  • Tata group hospitality arm Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) announced the appointment of Deepika Rao as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of its subsidiary Roots Corporation that owns and manages the Ginger brand of hotels.
  • Ginger is India's fastest growing budget brand of hotels.
