US Navy Operation in South China Sea Condemned

  • As per China's Defence Ministry, the United States had seriously harmed the country's sovereignty and security after a US Navy destroyer carried out a "freedom of navigation" operation in the disputed South China Sea.

Arctic Wintertime Sea Ice Extent

  • According to scientists at the NASA-supported National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and NASA, sea ice in the Arctic grew to its annual maximum extent last week, and joined 2015, 2016 and 2017 as the four lowest maximum extents on record.
  • On March 17, the Arctic sea ice cover peaked at 5.59 million square miles (14.48 million square kilometers), making it the second lowest maximum on record.

Jio Signs Pact with Saavn

  • Reliance Industries signed an agreement for combining digital music service Saavn with JioMusic to create a digital media platform having a total value of more than $1 billion.

Tata Power Gets New CEO

  • Tata Power has appointed Praveer Sinha as the firm's new chief executive officer and managing director with effect from May 1 to oversee its next phase of expansion.
  • Mr. Sinha is currently the CEO and managing director of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited, a public-private partnership between Tata Power and the Delhi government, that supplies power to more than seven million people in north and northwest Delhi.

Motorola to Open New Hubs in Tamil Nadu

  • Motorola announced its plans to open 100 new hubs in Tamil Nadu, including 50 in Chennai, with a focus on strengthening its retail presence.
  • According to GFK, approximately 5.5L smartphones are sold in Tamil Nadu per month out of which Chennai contributes 37% (2L units).
  • Motorola has also collaborated with Poorvika Mobiles across 43 cities in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karnataka and with Big C and Lot Mobile stores in 55 cities in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to provide retail access to consumers.

SoFi, the Silicon Robotic Fish

  • Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a silicon robotic fish named 'SoFi' to study the life of oceans.
  • Scientists said that the remote-controlled robot fish swims quietly through coral reefs and schools of fish and uses a fisheye lens to capture high-resolution photos and video with a camera built into its nose.
  • Built with a generic fish design, SoFi is white in colour, weighs less than 1.6 kg and about 47 cm long.
  • The robot fish navigates for up to 40 minutes at depths reaching almost 60 feet.

Indian Diplomats Attend Pakistan Day

  • In a first, senior Indian military officials and diplomats posted in Islamabad attended the military parade to mark the Pakistan Day.
  • The move of the Pakistan Army chief was aimed at sending a message of peace to New Delhi.
  • Indian Deputy High Commissioner J. P. Singh and Defence and Military Adviser Brigadier Sanjay P. Vishwasrao were among those who attended the event.

Rajya Sabha Polls

  • The BJP registered a major victory when the party managed to get all its nine candidates in the Rajya Sabha polls elected from Uttar Pradesh.
  • In all the elections held for 25 seats, BJP won 12, Congress managed 5, Trinamool gained 4, Telangana Rashtra Samiti 3 and the Samajwadi Party 1.

Hyderabad Airport Completes 10 Years

  • The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport completed 10 years with the laying of foundation stone of expansion, which will take the overall capacity of the facility to 40 million passengers per annum.
  • Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao laid the foundation stone for the expansion.
  • The event also saw launch of Airport City and foundation stone for Exhibition and Convention Centre.
