Xi may get to be China's prez for life

President Xi Jinping, seen as China's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong, could stay in office indefinitely after the ruling Communist Party called for removal of the two-term limit that would have brought his presidency to an end in 2023. Xi, 64, has held the post since 2013. The change, expected to be endorsed and which would also apply to the vice president, will be submitted to legislators at the annual full session of the rubber-stamp National People's Congress starting March 5.

Flipkart 'beats' Amazon in m-sales

E-commerce major Flipkart has increased its dominance in the competitive online smartphone market over Amazon for 2017, according to the latest report compiled by Counterpoint Research. Flipkart snagged a 51% share of the online smartphone shipments for 2017 while Amazon India cornered a 33% share, the report noted.
When compared to 2016, both the e-tailers have registered gains. Flipkart and Amazon India had a 44% and 31% market share respectively in 2016. The report noted that Amazon emerged with a higher share of premium smartphones sales made online compared to Flipkart. Amid concerns over slowing smartphone sales globally, both these players have relied heavily on the low-margin category as their core driver of growth.

Isro plans to build 'igloos' on the moon

Isro has started work on building igloos on the Moon. These 'lunar habitats', as scientists call them, will be built by sending robots and 3D printers to the Moon, and by using lunar soil and other material. Scientists have drawn up five designs of the lunar habitats, and hope their work could contribute to plans of creating outposts on the Moon. Although there's no mission plan yet, Isro wants to have the technology ready for building these structures.

India worried as China plans to build sea station in Maldives

A Joint Ocean Observation Station which China is looking to establish in the Maldives could prove to be another security challenge for India, with Maldivian opposition leaders claiming that the observatory will also have a military application with provision even for a submarine base. The observatory on Makunudhoo island, the westernmost atoll in the north, will allow Beijing a vantage point on a key Indian Ocean shipping route, political sources in capital Male said. It will be uncomfortably close to the Indian waters and test the red lines with regard to ties with Maldives.

India applauds China on becoming FATF vice-chair

The government congratulated China for becoming vice-chair of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), mandated to combat terror financing, and hoped Beijing would "uphold and support" the objective of the watchdog in a balanced and objective way. The FATF last week gave Islamabad time till June to prepare an action plan against terror groups operating from Pakistan. After this period, FATF will take a decision on whether or not to put it on the terror financing list.
