Billy Graham, preacher to millions, dies at 99

US evangelist Billy Graham, who counseled presidents and preached to millions across the world from his native North Carolina to communist North Korea during his 70 years in the pulpit, died at the age of 99. Graham died early morning at his home in Montreat, North Carolina.

UK parliament gets first woman 'Black Rod'

Sarah Clarke, the former director of the Wimbledon tennis championships, became the first woman to hold the post of "Black Rod" in the British Parliament, breaking its 650-year history of men only. Tasked with banging on the House of Commons door to summon MPs to the Queen's Speech every year, Black Rod plays a key role in parliamentary events. Besides ceremonial duties, the British parliament website says the Black Rod is responsible for controlling access to and maintaining order within the upper Lords chamber.

UP gets Rs. 20k cr defence corridor

Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh will get a Rs. 20,000 crore defence industrial corridor, one of the two proposed in the Union Budget, which will create 2.5 lakh jobs.

4G speed in India slowest in world

India may be going digital, but high-speed internet on mobile phones still remains a challenge, even on 4G. Despite telecom companies announcing massive rollout of 4G services, the average network speed in India remains the slowest across countries having substantial telecom networks, lagging even Pakistan, Algeria, Kazakhstan and Tunisia.

Warburg, Sequoia put Rs. 130cr into Capillary Tech

Cloud-based software solutions company Capillary Technologies has raised $20 million (Rs. 130 crore) from its existing investors Warburg Pincus and Sequoia Capital. This is the Bengaluru-based company's fourth round of funding. It had raised $45 million in September 2015 from the same investors and Norwest Venture Partners.

Zagitova smashes skating record

Fifteen-year old Alina Zagitova stole the show in figure skating as American skier Lindsey Vonn took bronze in her final Olympic downhill and Norway's Marit Bjoergen became the most successful athlete in Winter Games history. Zagitova was breathtaking in the Russian-dominated short programme, breaking the world record set just minutes earlier by her teammate, 18-year-old Evgenia Medvedeva.

Norway's Marit Bjoergen earns 14th medal, becomes most successful Winter Olympian in history

Marit Bjoergen made Olympic history and the United States women's cross-country team won its first medal ever — and it was gold. Bjoergen won her 14th medal at the Winter Games by taking bronze with her Norwegian teammates on Wednesday in the team sprint. That made her the most decorated Winter Olympian of all time, breaking the tie she held with Norwegian biathlete Ole Einar Bjoerndalen.

Elephanta gets 24x7 power

Seventy years after Independence, the Gharapuri island that houses the Elephanta Caves will finally get 24x7 power supply thanks to four 7.5 km undersea cables that will carry electricity all the way from Uran. Though just 10 km off the Mumbai coast, the caves, a UNESCO world heritage site, and the three villages on the island with a 950-strong population have, for close to three decades, received power through generators.

P&G India gets new head from April 1

Procter & Gamble India has picked homegrown talent Madhusudan Gopalanas its new managing director, who will take charge from April 1 this year. Gopalan, who is currently leading the P&G business in Indonesia, will take over from Al Rajwani, who is set to retire from the company after 37 years of service at the end of the financial year. Until his retirement, Rajwani will help in onboarding Gopalan at the India business.
