PPP nominates Hindu woman from Thar to contest as Senator
A Hindu woman from Thar in Sindh province has been nominated by Pakistan People's Party to contest for a general Senate seat. If Krishna Kumari from Nagarparkar district wins the election, she will be the first Hindu woman to become a Senator in the Muslimmajority Pakistan. Kumari is a Kolhi woman from the family of freedom fighter Rooplo Kolhi, who had waged a war against the British colonialist forces when they had attacked Sindh in 1857.
Crisis in Maldives deepens as prez declares 15-day emergency
Maldives President Abdulla Yameen declared a 15-day state of emergency, his aide Azima Shukoor announced, deepening the political crisis in the Indian Ocean nation. Sources in Male said late in the evening that Maldivian forces were preparing to storm the Supreme Court and arrest chief justice Abdulla Saeed and other judges. UK bank bans bitcoin purchases via credit card
Lloyds Banking Group joined major US banks such as Bank of American, Citigroup and JPMorgan in banning purchases of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies via credit card amid debt and security concerns. An LBG spokesman said the ban was across its Lloyd Bank, Bank of Scotland, Halifax and MBNA branded credit cards. He said LBG does "not accept credit card transactions involving the purchase of cryptocurrencies". There is a concern that customers who bought bitcoin last year when crytocurrencies in general surged in value have been left with big losses following massive declines in recent weeks.
India Gas Solutions, an equal joint venture of BP and Reliance Industries, plans to begin selling imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Indian customers in 12-18 months to cater to the rising natural gas demand in the country, Vinod Tahiliani, the new CEO of the joint venture, has said. Tahiliani has joined India Gas from BP India, where he was most recently the vice president, strategy and commercial. India Gas administers the existing gas sales contracts to customers for production from the RIL-BP's KGD6 block and is actively pursuing opportunities for marketing the proposed output from RSeries field in the KG Basin.

Nissan to Invest $9.5 B in China to Drive Sales
Japanese automaker Nissan Motor and its Chinese joint venture partner announced a $9.5 billion investment plan in China to increase annual sales by one million vehicles and boost electric car production. Dongfeng Motor Company is the latest Sino-foreign car company to splash out as China rolls out new regulations to limit gas vehicles and boost production of electric cars in coming years. Nissan's high-end brand, Infiniti, will go all electric in China by 2025, according to the plan. The company provided few specifics on the investment plan, saying the money would go into several areas, from manufacturing to human resources. The automaker sold 1.5 million vehicles in China last year, and said it plans to sell 2.6 million vehicles by 2022.
