Lanka lifts ban on women buying, selling alcohol

Sri Lanka has revoked a 38-year ban on selling alcohol to women and employing them in places where the brews are produced and sold. The finance ministry says minister Mangala Samaraweera signed the notification revoking the ban to restore gender equality and promote tourism. The ban had been in force since 1979, but many businesses had employed women to sell and serve alcohol and sold alcohol to them inspite of the ban.

SAUDI ARABIA ALLOWS WOMEN TO WATCH FOOTBALL MATCH

Saudi Arabia allowed women to enter a football stadium for the first time to watch a match, as the ultra-conservative kingdom eased strict decades-old rules separating the sexes. Women supporters arrived well ahead of the kick-off between Saudi Premier League clubs Al-Ahli and Al-Batin at a stadium in Jeddah.

French baguette to get Unesco heritage status?

President Emmanuel Macron on Friday joined calls by bakers for France’s traditional baguette to be recognised as one of the world’s cultural treasures on Unesco’s list of "intangible heritage". The call came after the art of Naples’ dough-twirling pizza makers was given the nod by the UN cultural body's World Heritage Committee in December.

Morgan Stanley values Zomato at $2.5bn

Wall Street giant Morgan Stanley’s research unit has pegged Zomato’s valuation at $2.5 billion in a report released on Thursday. This is almost three times its valuation from its last funding round. The coverage on Zomato by the international brokerage firm was done while taking stock of the startup’s publicly traded shareholder, Info Edge, which runs portals like Naukri.com and 99acres.com. The report comes out a time Zomato is in talks with Alibaba’s affiliate Ant Financial to raise around $150 million in new financing, which is expected to value the food discovery and delivery platform at a billion dollars. The deal is in the final stages, according to people aware of the matter. The online food-delivery space has seen a resurgence after a few tough years on the back of user numbers growing rapidly and new players like UberEats and now Ola with its Foodpanda acquisition jumping in for a slice of the market. Ola has committed to invest additional $200 million in the food delivery business.

Isro launches 100th satellite, 30 others

India reaffirmed its space prowess and commercial launch capabilities as it successfully launched its 100th satellite along with 30 other spacecraft, including weather observation Cartosat 2 series onboard the Polar rocket. This was PSLV’s longest-ever mission. With the successful launch, including 28 satellites from foreign countries, by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, Isro put behind a rare failure it encountered four months ago. The space agency had suffered a setback after the failure of the PSLV-C39 mission in August last year. The previous mission to launch backup navigation satellite IRNSS-1H on board PSLV-C39 had failed after the heat shield did not separate in the final leg of the launch sequence, with the satellite getting stuck in the fourth stage of the rocket. PM Modi hailed Isro scientists for the successful PSLV C-40 mission. A visibly relieved Isro chairman A S Kiran Kumar, on his final mission as the chief of the space agency, said he was happy to provide Cartosat 2 Series as a New Year gift for the country.

Time for Kohli to set the benchmark

When Virat Kohli walks out to bat in the second Test, it’ll be his 65th five-day game after having made his debut in mid-2011. Joe Root, Kohli’s English counterpart, finished playing his 65th five-day game in the last Test match of the Ashes after making his debut in Dec 2012. Four Test matches short of both is Steve Smith, the Australian captain. The last Ashes Test was his 61st, despite making his debut in the longest format in mid-2010. The fact is there’s a race to be the best in the world and that alone should matter to Kohli. He’s spent a good half-a-dozen years preparing himself for it. And while nobody has to spell it out right now, 2018 has got to be the year when he will have to do his catching up. His time has, in fact, already begun.
