China denied as “unnecessary” speculation reports that it was planning to build a military base at Jiwani in Pakistan’s Balochistan province close to the strategic Chabahar port, which is being jointly developed by India, Iran and Afghanistan. According to reports, Pakistan may allow China to build the military base in Jiwani which is also close the Gwadar port being developed by Beijing. China is in talks with Pakistan to build its second overseas military base as part of a push for greater maritime capabilities along strategic sea routes. Billionaire steps up efforts to oust prez
Billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer, who has spent millions on national ads calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, will spend $30 million this year trying to help Democrats win control of the US House of Representatives. The House impeaches, or brings formal charges against an official, in what would be the first step in removing Trump from office. The US Senate tries the case. Steyer will not, however, require House candidates whom he supports to pass a “litmus test”. The $30 million will be used to mobilise young voters in 10 key states: Florida, Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, California, Pennsylvania, Iowa, New Hampshire and Arizona. Americans will head to the polls in November when 34 seats in the Senate and all 435 House seats will be up for grabs. Democrats are hoping to ride wins last year in Alabama and Virginia to victory in those elections, potentially taking control of Congress from Republicans.

Banks warn of new mobile malware
Banks are warning customers of the risk of their mobile banking credentials being stolen by malware masquerading as a Flash player sent to them through unwarranted messages or through pop-ups on websites. The warning follows an advisory by Quick Heal Security Labs that it has detected an Android Banking Trojan that targets over 232 banking apps, including those offered by Indian lenders. The malware is known as Android.banker.A2f8a (previously detected as Android.banker.A9480). The operation is similar to a phishing website. The malware works in the background and sends fake notifications, resembling those sent by banking applications. When users open these applications they are directed to fake login screens that are then used by the attackers to steal and extract confidential data. The malware also intercepts SMSs sent by banks and is able to access one-time passwords.
