Scotland bans use of wild animals in circuses

Scotland has banned the use of wild animals in circuses, becoming the first of the UK’s nations to do so. Under new legislation passed by the Scottish Parliament, travelling circuses that use wild animals will be banned from entering the country. The bill was introduced by Roseanna Cunningham, Scotland’s environment secretary. It followed a public consultation that showed widespread backing for the measure.

Govt lets I-T access defaulters’ address from banks

The government has amended rules and empowered the taxman to use banking, insurance and municipal corporation’s database to obtain address of a ‘hiding’ or an ‘untraceable’ income tax defaulter for issuance of notices or summons to them and extract due taxes. Till now, tax authorities could only issue notice to a defaulting or erring taxpayer as per the address provided by them in their PAN (Permanent Account Number), the ITR (income tax return) or any tax-related communication. 

Spice to Exit ‘Non-core’ Cellphone Retailing Business

BK Modi-owned Spice Group is selling its 120-store cellphone retail chain Hotspot for an undisclosed amount in a private equity-supported management buyout by its executive director, Subhasish Mohanty. Spice Mobility chairman Dilip Modi confirmed the deal. Divestment of the retail business is a strategic step since the company wants to focus on digital services, financial services and payments, and digital entertainment working with telecom operators in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Skechers files cases against ecommerce marketplace Flipkart

US lifestyle and footwear brand Skechers has filed cases against ecommerce marketplace Flipkart and four sellers on its platform for allegedly selling its counterfeit products, an issue that has grown exponentially after the rise of online marketplaces in India.

World’s Largest Amphibious Aircraft Takes Off in China

China’s domestically developed AG600, the world’s largest amphibious aircraft, performed its maiden flight from an airport on the shores of the South China Sea, the latest step in a military modernisation programme. Powered by four turboprop engines, the AG600 can carry 50 people during maritime search-and-rescue missions, and can scoop up 12 tonnes of water within 20 seconds for fire fighting trips, according to state media. The aircraft has received 17 orders so far from Chinese government departments and Chinese companies. It has a maximum flight range of 4,500 km and a maximum take-off weight of 53.5 tonnes.

India Clinch Series 3-0 In Mumbai

After crushing Sri Lanka in the first two games, India again displayed their vulnerability in conditions that aid the seamers a bit, as they huffed and puffed their way to beat the visitors by five wickets in what turned out be an exciting third and final T20 International game  at the Wankhede Stadium. The hosts thus completed a 3-0 clean sweep of the series to wind up the year on a high before they embark upon the South African tour a few days later.

New Rules for SA’s 4-Day Test with Zimbabwe

The Four Day Day-Night Test between South Africa and Zimbabwe will be staged under experimental playing conditions. There will be several variations from standard Test playing conditions in this one-off match. Play will be scheduled for six and a half hours each day, half an hour more than in five day games, with 98 overs due to be bowled in a day, instead of 90. The first two sessions of the play will be two hours and 15 minutes each, with a 20 minutes tea break, instead of lunch break after the first session. There will be a 40 minute dinner break after the second session. There is no provision for time lost to be carried over to subsequent days. It is the first Test match since 1972-73 to be scheduled over 4 days.

Bengaluru becomes first city to get its own logo

Brand Bengaluru got its own logo  – the tagline ‘Bengaluru – Be U’ (be you) is expected to build the city’s image on the global stage. The city is the first to gets its own identity badge. Selected from among 1,350 entries, the logo aims to signify Bengaluru’s cosmopolitan culture, a sense of belonging, 480-year history and futuristic outlook. The rolling font was devised by bankers-turned-designers Rushi Patel and M Venkateswara Rao, founders of Nammur, a design firm. The first two letters, B, E, and the last, U, of Bengaluru are in red, highlighting the tagline Be U. The seventh and eighth letters (U and R) resemble the vowel, oo, in Kannada.

Jai Ram Thakur Appointed as 13th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh

The BJP gave the reins of the state to five-time MLA and former minister Jai Ram Thakur. The 52-year-old will be the 13th chief minister of the hill state. He will take oath on December 27 in the presence of PM Narendra Modi. This is the first time in the state that a leader from Mandi has become CM. 

Modi to be first Indian PM at Davos in 20 yrs

PM Narendra Modi will make his debut at Davos, where the world’s top CEOs gather for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in January. Modi will be the first Indian PM to attend the meet in two decades. Only two PMs—PV Narasimha Rao and HD Deve Gowda-—had gone to Davos with the last one being in 1997. Modi will be the first Indian PM to attend the meet in over two decades but  it will be the first time that an Indian Prime Minister will be the treated like the chief guest, with the country expected to dominate the show, where nearly a hundred Indian corporate chiefs and policymakers will be present. The India theme will be in focus at the conference with several sessions around India.
