Theresa May Suffers Brexit Bill Defeat

  • The British government suffered a major defeat as Conservative Party rebels allied with the Labour and other opposition parties to push through an amendment to Brexit legislation going through the House of Commons. The amendment will require MPs to have a meaningful say on the terms of Britain’s departure from the EU.

China Summons Australian Envoy

  • China has summoned the Australian ambassador amid a growing row over allegations of Chinese meddling in politics in Australia.
  • Beijing lodged an official protest with Canberra last week after Australia’s Parliament singled out China as a focus of concern when it proposed laws on foreign interference.

Foreign Aid Groups to Leave Pakistan

  • Pakistan has ordered 21 foreign aid groups to wrap up their activities and prepare to leave after they failed to re-register under tough regulations introduced two years ago.
  • As per reports, Open Society Foundations, the charity founded by George Soros, and the South Africa-based ActionAid were among the groups informed of the decision this week, without providing a complete list. The non-governmental organisations have been given two months to close their offices and vacate the country.
  • The government is scrutinising the documents of another 19 foreign aid groups to determine whether they should be allowed to remain in the country.

WPI Inflation at 8-month High

  • Inflation based on wholesale prices accelerated to 8-month high of 3.93% in November due to a sharp rise in onion prices and costlier seasonal vegetables. Calculated on wholesale price index (WPI), the inflation was 3.59% in October this year, and 1.82% in November last.
  • The November figure is the highest so far this fiscal.

Tata Motors Delivers EVs

  • Tata Motors delivered the first set of Tigor Electric Vehicles (EVs) to Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL), which is in the process of procuring 10,000 electric vehicles for the use of government entities.

Cotton Yarn Exports Fall

  • With China, the largest importer of yarn, reducing its purchases, cotton yarn exports from the country fell 10.2% year-on-year to 464 million kg between April and September this year. Cotton yarn exports advanced by a mere 1.1% year-on-year in value terms to around $1.5 billion during the timeframe.
  • China has shifted from India to Vietnam/Indonesia as they have duty free access while Indian yarn carries 3.5% import duty.

Solar System Just Like Ours Discovered

  • NASA's big Kepler discovery has revealed an eighth planet orbiting the star Kepler-90.
  • The discovery was made by applying artificial intelligence to data from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope.
  • The planet Kepler-90i demonstrates for the first time that other stars can host planetary systems as populous as our own solar system.
  • Sitting around a Sun-like star 2,545 light years away in the constellation Draco, Kepler-90i – like Earth – is also the third rock from its sun.

  • Ace shuttler P. V. Sindhu stormed into the semifinals of the Dubai World Superseries after defeating her Japanese counterpart Sayaka Sato in straight sets.

A Big Step in Defence

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally commissioned the first of six Scorpene diesel-electric submarines into the Navy. This is the Navy’s first modern conventional submarine in almost two decades since the INS Sindhushastra was procured from Russia in July 2000.
  • Kalvari’s induction in the Navy is a big step in defence preparedness.
  • The Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) has undertaken the project to construct the six submarines with technology transfer from the Naval Group (Formerly DCNS) of France.
  • The Scorpene submarines can undertake different missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.

Parliament Winter Session

  • Parliament winter session is all set to begin. Nearly 25 pending bills and 14 new ones, including Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Muslim women rights, will be picked up in the session spread over 22 days.
  • Main issues in the session will be supplementary demand for grants, Constitutional amendment Article 123 (Constitutional status to backward classes), Muslim women Right on Marriage 2017 Bill.
  • Among the 25 Bills, few crucial Bills expected to be taken up are:
  • 1. The Goods & Services Tax (Compensation to States) Ordinance, 2017
  • 2. Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill
  • 3. Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017
  • 4. Indian Forest (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017
  • 5. Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016
  • 6. Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2013
  • 7. Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016

BJP Retains Kandivli Ward

  • The BJP has improved its tally in the Shiv Sena-ruled Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) by one more seat after the party candidate Pratibha Girkar defeated Neelam Madale of Congress in the by-election held in ward no 21 in suburban Kandivli.
  • The BJP's strength in the country's richest municipal corporation, which has 227 members, has now gone up to 83 seats against the Sena's 85.
