North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile
North Korea fired one ballistic Missile from Pyongsong, a city in South Pyongan province, over the sea between South Korea and Japan. NHK in Japan reported the missile may have landed in the water of Japan’s exclusive economic zone. South Korea and the US are analysing the type of missile fired by North Korea. South Korea’s military conducted a missile firing test in response to the provocation.
India to Provide Naval Support to Singapore
India is getting set to provide to Singapore naval practice and logistics facilities, which will include live firing drills in the Andamans, to add to the ones already being provided to the army and air force of the city-state for the last 10 years. Visiting Singapore defence minister Ng Eng Hen, who reached New Delhi from Kalaikunda airbase in West Bengal , will hold delegation level talks with his Indian counterpart Nirmala Sitharaman in South Block. The bilateral naval agreement is also slated to be inked during the talks. With land and airspace being a scarce commodity in Singapore, the city state has been utilising Indian military facilities to train its own small but high-tech armed forces under special agreements first signed in 2007 and 2008.
Iran has decided to lift ban on import of Indian Basmati. All India Rice Exporters’ Association (AIREA) has welcomed the step as this would give a boost to the rice industry. Iran imposed a ban on import of basmati in July this year to protect its own paddy farmers.

India’s telecom regulator has backed an open and free internet, saying internet service providers cannot discriminate on how people access web content. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) upheld the concept of so-called net neutrality and said no Internet Service Provider (ISP) can grant preferential data speeds or treatment to any web content.The global debate over net neutrality revolves around whether ISPs should be treated like public utilities to ensure the internet is open and free, or be allowed to prioritise access to content of their choosing for an extra fee from websites and services. India’s stand on net neutrality contrasts that of the US telecom.
Mitra- The Robot who Greeted Ivanka
Mitra, a humanoid robot developed by Bengaluru based Invento Robotics, greeted Ivanka Trump and PM Narendra Modi at the Hyderabad Convention Centre (HICC). The robot, named after the Vedic god of friendship, is a poster child for cooperation in artificial intelligence between India and China.
Mitra is designed to be an “indoor autonomous robot” or one that can be deployed in offices, hospitals and even multiplex cinemas. “The computer-aided designing has been done in India. Its plastic mould is being made in a factory in Dongguan and the printed circuit boards and motor controls are being manufactured in Shenzhen.
Ajay Kumar, a Kerala-cadre IAS officer has been appointed Secretary, Department of Defence Production. AK Gupta, previous incumbent has superannuated recently, and the charge was held by Sanjay Mitra, Defence Secretary.
Pradeep Singh Kharola Appointed Chairman of Air India
Senior IAS Officer Pradeep Singh Kharola has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Air India and would replace Rajiv Bansal, who has been serving as the interim CMD. Kharola is the Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd.
Global Entreprenurship Summit 2017
Over 1,600 delegates from 150 countries, a majority of them women entrepreneurs and investors, are participating in the three-day summit being held in South Asia for the first time. Ivanka Trump, the adviser to the US President Donald Trump, is leading a 350-member strong American contingent. With the theme “Women First, Prosperity for All”, the summit is being co-hosted by NITI Ayog and the United States.
