Terror Strike in Egypt

At least 235 worshippers were killed and 109 others injured when heavy-armed militants bombed a mosque and opened fire on people attending Friday prayers in Egypt’s restive North Sinai region, in the deadliest terror attack in the country. The militants launched a targeted bomb and gun attack on the al-Rowda mosque in Al-Arish city. 

US to Send F-22 Jets to South Korea

The US will send F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets to South Korea for a joint drill in a new show of force aimed at Pyongyang.

Six fighter jets, normally based in Okinawa, Japan, will be deployed to the South for a fiveday joint military exercise, Vigilant Ace, starting December 4. The move comes as the US pushes what President Donald Trump has called a “maximum pressure campaign” against the North’s nuclear programme.

Standard & Poor’s Keeps India’s Rating Unchanged

Credit Rating agency Standard & Poor’s kept its sovereign rating for India unchanged at ‘BBB-minus’ with a ‘stable’ outlook , saying vulnerabilities stemming from low per capita income and high government debt balance strong GDP growth.

Dengue Vaccine for India by 2019

India could have a vaccine for the dreaded dengue as early as 2019-end, according to drug maker Panacea Biotec, which has secured permission to conduct clinical trials for the vaccine in India. Panacea Biotec will start clinical trials on humans by early 2018. It has received permission to conduct Phase I/II trials from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI).

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) will be renamed and restructured to make it more “lean and professional” with the government aiming to bring down its strength by 50 percent by 2022. The word ‘authority’ will be removed from the name of the apex sports body.

‘Golden Temple’- The Most Visited Place of the World in Record Book

The Golden Temple has been declared “ the most visited place of the world” by the London-based World Book of Records (WBR). An estimated 80,000 devotees visit Golden Temple daily and 55,000 - 60,000  of them partake of langar in the Gurudwara. 

Practice for Recapture of Andaman by Armed Forces

In an unprecedented event, troops of the three armed forces have carried out a military exercise with a scenario to recapture an island in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. It has been a five-day trial services by Army, Navy, and the Indian Air Force, and  called as “Defence of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Exercise (DANX). This was first such exercise to prepare for a contingency at this scale on the islands located in the Bay of Bengal and very close to vital straits of Malacca. The main objective of the exercise was to practice and validate procedures and drills of all commands forces aimed at defending Andaman and Nicobar islands. 

State cuts extra marks for arts & culture in SSC

Ahead of the SSC examination in March next year, the state has revised its rules for awarding additional marks to students excelling in arts and culture. Students can now earn up to 15 marks extra, as opposed to 25. Besides, the state has done away with the 2% reservation students who got the extra marks could avail in first year junior college admissions. In addition to the marks doled out for participation in sports, for the first time in March 2017, extra marks were given for art and cultural activities for Std X students.
