Australian Court Disqualifies Deputy PM

  • Australia’s High Court disqualified Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and four senators from sitting in Parliament in a unanimous ruling that could cost the government its slender majority in Parliament.
  • The seven judges rejected the government’s argument that five of the lawmakers, including three government lawmakers, should be exempt from the ban because they had not voluntarily acquired or retained citizenship of another country.

Syria Rejects Report for April Sarin Attack

  • The Syrian government rejected a report sent to the U.N. Security Council that blamed it for a chemical attack on the opposition-held town of Khan Sheikhoun in April in which dozens of people were killed.
  • The official said that the report had been compiled under instructions from the United States and other Western countries "to place more political pressure" on Syria.

Catalan Parliament Declares Independence

  • Catalan lawmakers voted to declare independence from Spain but Madrid immediately moved to quash the breakaway bid in a sharp escalation of a crisis that has caused jitters in secession-wary Europe.
  • As tens of thousands of pro-independence activists gathered outside, the regional parliament in Barcelona passed a resolution to declare Catalonia an independent state in the form of a republic.

Peatland Plants Adapting Well to Climate Change

  • Peatland plants account for just three per cent of the Earth’s surface but play a major role in offsetting carbon dioxide emissions.
  • A team of scientists has discovered that the plants that make up peat bogs adapt exceptionally well to climate change.
  • As per experts, even though certain species in a peat bog’s plant ‘community’ might disappear because of the effect of rising temperatures and increasing levels of atmospheric sulphur and nitrogen, their place will be taken by other species with different environmental preferences but a similar biological ‘function’.

TVS Motor Partners with Motoplex

  • As part of its efforts to strengthen its presence in the Caribbean region, two and three-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motor Co. has entered into an exclusive partnership with Motoplex S.A.S of Grupo Bonanza.
  • As per the accord, Motoplex will develop and operate 40 TVS Motor dealerships in the Dominican Republic. TVS Wego, TVS Sport, TVS Apache RTR series will be sold in that country.

ICICI Bank Net Declines

  • ICICI Bank reported a 34% decline in its net profit for the quarter ended September 30 as compared with a year earlier. The fall in profit is attributable to the one-time gain of Rs. 5,682 crore booked in the second quarter of the previous financial year.

L&T Scouts for Launch Pads

  • Larsen & Toubro Ltd. is eyeing Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat for its Rs. 500 crore missile and missile systems plant.
  • The missile and missile systems plant is being formed in a joint venture with MBDA, a French company. The new joint venture company, L&T MBDA Missile Systems Ltd., will have an equity stake of 51:49.
  • Besides, L&T, in partnership with South Korean firm Hanwha, would be setting up a battle tank plant at Hazira in Gujarat.

World's First Robot with a Citizenship

  • Saudi Arabia has become the first country in the world to grant a citizenship to a robot named Sophia.
  • Sophia, the female robot, has been developed by a Hong Kong firm called Hanson Robots.
  • This move has been taken to promote the country as a place that has taken Artificial Intelligence to a totally different level.

New Delhi in Top-10 Fastest-growing Cities

  • According to a study, one Indian and five Chinese cities have made it to the top-10 fastest growing cities for tourism in the decade between 2016-2026. While Chonging in south-west China took the top spot, New Delhi was placed seventh in a list dominated by Asian cities.
