Total Termination of Iran Nuclear Deal

  • US President Donald Trump said that a total termination of the Iran nuclear deal remains possible, after refusing to certify the 2015 accord and leaving its fate to Congress.
  • His comments came as the EU announced it was sending its chief diplomat to Washington next month to fight to save an accord that saw Tehran dramatically scale back its nuclear ambitions in return for an end to punishing sanctions.

New Sanctions on North Korea

  • The EU imposed fresh sanctions on North Korea as part of international efforts to punish the pariah regime for its nuclear and ballistic weapons programmes.
  • Foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg signed off a new package of measures including a ban on investments in North Korea and on European Union exports of oil to Pyongyang.

Inflation at Wholesale Level Slows

  • According to official data released, inflation at the wholesale level cooled to 2.6% in September due in large part to a slowdown in the increase in food prices.
  • Growth in the Wholesale Price Index slowed in September from 3.24% in August. Inflation in the primary articles category slowed to 0.15% in September from 2.66% in August.
  • Within this, inflation in the food articles segment slowed drastically to 2.04%.

Bharti and Millicom Seal Deal

  • Bharti Airtel and Millicom International Cellular announced the closure of a deal to combine their operations in Ghana.
  • Under the joint agreement, Airtel and Millicom will have equal ownership and governance rights in the combined entity, which will have revenues of about $300 million.
  • The merged entity will become Ghana’s second largest mobile operator with close to 10 million subscribers.

NIIF’s First Investor

  • The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority became the first institutional investor in the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund’s Master Fund, with an investment of $1 billion.
  • Six domestic institutional investors, including HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company Limited, HDFC Asset Management Company Limited, Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited, ICICI Bank Limited, Kotak Mahindra Old Mutual Life Insurance Limited and Axis Bank Limited, will also join the NIIF Master Fund.

First Indian Woman Wrestler to Sign for WWE

  • Kavita Devi, a former competitive powerlifter, has become the first ever Indian woman to be signed by the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
  • Kavita underwent training to be a professional wrestler under the guidance of The Great Khali.
  • Kavita Devi also has the distinction of being the first Indian woman to compete in a WWE ring, as she was a featured participant in the Mae Young Classic women’s tournament.
  • In another first for WWE’s women’s evolution, WWE also announced that Shadia Bseiso from Jordan has become the first Arab woman from the Middle East to sign a WWE developmental contract.

INS Kiltan Commissioned

  • Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman commissioned the third of four indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) stealth corvettes INS Kiltan under Project 28 (Kamorta class) into the Indian Navy.
  • INS Kiltan is indigenously designed by the Indian Navy's in-house organization, Directorate of Naval Design and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
  • It's India’s first major warship to have a superstructure of carbon fibre composite material resulting in improved stealth features, lower top weight and maintenance costs.

India and Russia to Hold Military Exercise

  • India and Russia will hold a mega war game in October involving their armies, navies and the air forces for the first time to further ramp up military ties.
  • Exercise INDRA-2017, the first ever Tri Services Joint Exercise between Indian and Russian Armed Forces will be conducted in the Eastern Military District of Russia from October 19 to 27.
  • Exercise INDRA in its previous nine avatars has been conducted as a single service exercise.
  • The year 2017 marks a major milestone as this Exercise has been upgraded to involve all the three Services of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy & Air Force).
