Tension mounted in Spain after Catalonia’s leader vowed that the region would declare independence within days, defying a stern warning from the country’s king Felipe VI. The courts meanwhile placed Catalan police officials and pro-independence civil leaders under investigation for alleged sedition as Spain sank deeper into its worst political crisis in decades.
According to Carles Puigdemont, the Catalan government will act at the end of this week or the beginning of next to declare independence.
Controversial Anti-terrorism Law Approved
France's lower house of Parliament has approved a controversial new counter-terrorism bill.
The bill was approved on its first reading in the lower house of Parliament.
The new anti-terror bill will leave the country in a permanent state of emergency with several controversial measures in place by allowing police to continue to carry out house raids without a warrant.
The bill was proposed by the French President, Emmanuel Macron.
Mongolia Names New PM
Mongolia named Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh as the new Prime Minister, weeks after the previous leader was ousted over corruption allegations.
Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, a former deputy PM known for his macho image, was selected by the ruling Mongolia People's Party (MPP), which took power after a landslide election victory a little over a year ago.
Khurelsukh started his career in the army but joined parliament as a member of the MPP in 2000.
Srei Equipment Finance Limited (Srei), a wholly owned subsidiary of Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited, and automotive major Tata Motors, have signed a memorandum of understanding to finance Tata Motors commercial vehicles with a special focus on construction and mining tippers.
The agreement will allow both Srei and Tata Motors to explore enhanced growth prospects in the heavy-duty tipper truck segment in the country.
This partnership would enable customers to acquire their preferred brand of vehicle with customised financing solutions.
Chinese Firm Buys 74% in Gland Pharma
Chinese drug firm Fosun Pharma has acquired approximately 74% in Hyderabad-based Gland Pharma at a valuation of not more than $1.09 billion.
Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical (Group) Co. Ltd. had, in July last year, announced plans to acquire 86.08% stake in Gland Pharma. But in September this year, Fosum had decided to scale down its proposed acquisition in Gland Pharma to 74%.
RBI Offers No Relief to Borrowers
The Reserve Bank kept interest rates unchanged at its fourth bi-monthly monetary policy review for FY 2017-18 amid lingering concerns over inflation.
The government has been pressing for a cut in interest rates to spur growth which fell to 3-year low of 5.7 percent in the June quarter.
The monetary policy committee left the repo rate - the rate at which the central bank infuses liquidity in the banking system (or lends to banks) - unchanged at 6 per cent.
The reverse repo, at which RBI borrows from banks will continue to be at 5.75 per cent.

Five Giant Black Hole Pairs Spotted
Scientists have identified five pairs of supermassive black holes, each millions of times the mass of the sun, that could help better understand the phenomenon of gravitational waves – ripples in the fabric of space and time.
These black hole couples formed when two galaxies collided and merged with each other, forcing their supermassive black holes close together.
The winners of the prestigious Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2017 are Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson for the high-resolution structure determination of biomolecules in solution.
Rajnish Kumar was named the new chairman of the country's largest public sector lender State Bank of India (SBI), succeeding Arundhati Bhattacharya who completes her four-year term on Friday.
Kumar is at present one of the four managing directors of the SBI.
Kumar joined the SBI board in May 2015.
India to Help Myanmar
India will help Myanmar in upgrading a police training centre for women and strengthen the country's police force as a whole.
The MoU covers upgrading of the Yamethin Women's Police Training Centre to boost the capabilities of the Myanmar Government in building capacities of its police force with technical and financial assistance from Government of India.
