Saudi Allows Women to Drive

  • Saudi Arabia’s historic decision to allow women to drive won plaudits internationally and inside the conservative kingdom, as euphoria mixed with disbelief among activists who long fought the ban.
  • Saudi Arabia was the only country in the world to impose a ban on women driving and its maintenance was seen as a symbol of repression in the Gulf kingdom around the world.

Libya Bans Entry of US Citizens

  • Libya`s interim government announced it would ban entry of US citizens into Libyan territory in response to a decision by Donald Trump to suspend the entry of Libyans.
  • The eastern government called the move by the US a serious escalation targeting Libyans, accusing the country of placing Libyans in the same place with terrorists, whom the Libyan armed forces are fighting with the help of the Libyan people.

Iceberg Breaks Off

  • In the second incident of its kind in two years, an iceberg over 250 square kilometres in size has broken off from an enormous Antarctic glacier.
  • The Pine Island Glacier is one of the largest in West Antarctica and loses 45 billion tonnes of ice to the ocean each year.

Earth's Seventh Continent

  • In February this year, scientists unearthed Earth's seventh continent, which was named 'Zealandia'.
  • Zealandia, which is mostly submerged beneath the South Pacific, was once part of the Gondwana super-continent but broke away some 75 million-years-ago.
  • Researchers found significant new fossil discoveries that prove Zealandia was not always as deep beneath the waves as it is today.

Piramal Enters Home Loans

  • Piramal Finance Limited (PFL) has entered the retail housing finance business through its wholly owned subsidiary, Piramal Housing Finance Private Limited to tap demand for home and construction loans in Asia’s third-largest economy.
  • The real estate-to-healthcare group’s housing finance firm had received a licence from National Housing Bank earlier this month and is eyeing assets under management of Rs. 15,000 crore by 2020.

Citibank and SCB Invest in SWIFT India

  • Citibank and Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) have become shareholders of SWIFT India Domestic Services Private Limited.
  • But the extend of investment by Citibank and Standard Chartered Bank in the Indian joint venture was not disclosed.

  • Google, Bharat Heavy Electricals and State Bank of India have been named as the top three best places to work in India by leading global job site Indeed.
  • Indeed revealed the 50 best places to work in India for 2017.
  • While Amazon grabbed the 4th place, Marriott International was ranked 5th, Intel (6th), American Express (7th), IBM (8th), Tata Consultancy Services (9th) and Hyatt (10th).
  • Indeed has over 15 million company reviews globally and these companies are the most highly rated on overall employee experience.

First Lunar Station

  • Russia and the United States agreed to cooperate on a NASA-led project to build the first lunar space station, part of a long-term project to send humans to Mars.
  • The project envisages building a crew-tended spaceport in lunar orbit that would serve as a gateway to deep space and the lunar surface.

BCCI's Head of Cricket Operations Resigns

  • The BCCI's General Manager (Cricket Operations) M. V. Sridhar tendered his resignation. He was under the scanner on issues of propriety.
  • CEO Rahul Johri will now lead Cricket Operations, supported by a three-member team comprising Mayank Parik (International Cricket, Logistics), KVP Rao (Domestic Cricket) and Gaurav Saxena (for ICC/ACC matters, co-ordination with other international boards and point person for the Indian men's cricket team).

Sonars and Missiles for Navy

  • Chairing her first Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman cleared a project worth Rs. 200 crore for buying indigenous sonars for Indian naval ships, and another one for missiles for the navy.
  • The DAC cleared an Acceptance of Necessity for the Indian Navy for procurement of upgraded sonars for its destroyers and frigates under the Buy Indian category.

Jharkhand ex-CM Barred from Contesting Elections

  • The Election Commission disqualified for three years former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda from contesting elections for failing to file details of expenses related to the 2009 Lok Sabha polls he fought.
  • He had won the polls from the Singhbhum Lok Sabha seat in Jharkhand.
  • Koda was elected as independent MP in 2009, and in October 2010 the Election Commission had issued a notice to him asking him as to why he should not be disqualified on the ground that he had allegedly shown the election expenses much less than the actual amount.
