Safe Zones for Rohingya

  • Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon members states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take a united stand to resolve the Rohingya issue before it is too late and placed a set of proposals.
  • The proposals, placed at the OIC Contact Group at the United Nations headquarters, included a call for an immediate end to atrocities against Rohingya Muslims, the creation of safe zones in Myanmar for the protection of civilians and an immediate and unconditional implementation of the recommendations put forward by the Kofi Annan Commission.

Implementation of UNSC Resolution on Kashmir

  • The Prime Minister of Pakistan has demanded the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution on Kashmir, asserting that his country will continue supporting the right to self-determination in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Identifying Kashmir as the core issue with its eastern neighbour, Abbasi exuded confidence that the resolution will help address the contentious issue.

Powers over Foreign Finance Firms

  • The EU unveiled plans for sweeping new powers over foreign financial firms in Europe that would give the bloc strict oversight over the London financial hub after Brexit.
  • The draft law, presented by European Commission vice-president Valdis Dombrovskis, is intended to toughen EU financial rules and better coordinate national regulation on banking and trading in Europe.

Presence of Lethal Pollutants over Asia

  • A study jointly conducted by experts from the Indian Space Research Organisation and National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the US have confirmed the presence aerosol layer over the Asia region.
  • This layer contains particles of size less than 0.25 micron and are 90 per cent volatile.
  • The new finding has also confirmed the presence of nitrate, which as per experts is concerning as the rise in the presence of pollutants can eventually become lethal.

Tata Steel Set for Europe Venture

  • Tata Steel is set to forge ahead with a long-awaited merger of its European assets with Germany’s Thyssenkrupp AG after the firms signed a memorandum of understanding to create an equal joint venture.

ONGC Discovers Oil in Arabian Sea

  • State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp, (ONGC) has made a significant oil discovery to the west of its prime Mumbai High fields in the Arabian Sea.
  • The discovery in the well WO-24-3 is estimated to hold an in-place reserve of about 20 million tonnes. Mumbai High, India’s biggest oil field, currently produces 205,000 barrels of oil per day and the new find would add to that production in less than two years time.

GDP Growth at 3-year Low

  • The government is considering additional measures to bolster economy that has hit a three-year low of 5.7 per cent in the first quarter of the current fiscal.
  • Since early 2016, GDP growth has fallen for six consecutive quarters, slumping to a three-year low of 5.7 per cent in the April-June quarter, with India losing the fastest growing economy tag to China for the second straight quarter.

New Superconductive Skin

  • A team of researchers has created a new type of skin that allows robotic limbs to feel hot and cold. While still in development, it could potentially give those with prosthetic limbs the ability to feel again, as well as lead to more advanced medical equipment.

Ships and One Submarine Put on Deployment

  • Two Indian naval ships, a submarine and two long-range maritime reconnaissance aircrafts of the Western Naval Command have been deployed in the Western Arabian Sea and the southern Indian Ocean reached Oman.
  • This is after a long time that a submarine has been put on long-range deployment by the Indian Navy, and comes at a time when Chinese submarines are being spotted more frequently in the international waters of the Indian Ocean.
  • The Naval units are on a month-long deployment with the aim of enhancing surveillance and cooperation with the Arabian Sea rim nations.
