Turkey Signs Deal to Buy Missile Systems

  • Turkey has signed a deal with Russia to buy S-400 missile defence systems in its first major weapons purchase from Moscow.
  • The accord for the surface-to-air missile defence batteries is also Ankara’s most significant deal with a non-NATO supplier.

Talks to Reopen Nathu La Pass

  • As per reports, China is ready for talks to re-open the Nathu La pass for Indian pilgrims.
  • China had closed the Nathu La pass in mid June over the military stand-off on Doklam.
  • China is ready to keep communication with the Indian side in regard to opening of the pass and other issues concerning the pilgrimage by Indians.

May Passes Key Brexit Test

  • British MPs voted in favour of a Bill to end the U.K.’s membership to the European Union, a reprieve for Prime Minister Theresa May who hailed the historic decision.
  • Lawmakers voted by 326 to 290 in favour of backing the EU Withdrawal Bill, which will now go forward for further scrutiny by MPs.
  • The Bill is aimed at overturning the 1972 European Communities Act, which took the U.K. into the then European Economic Community. It will convert all existing EU laws into U.K. law to ensure there are no gaps in legislation on Brexit day, scheduled for March, 2019.

Mindtree Opens First Global Hub

  • Bengaluru-based technology services and digital transformation company Mindtree inaugurated its first international Digital Pumpkin innovation hub located at its Warren, New Jersey office.
  • The Digital Pumpkin portfolio includes solutions around Internet of Things, artificial Intelligence, cognitive solutions, virtual and augmented reality, machine learning, conversational, cloud and big data.

HDFC Bank Overtakes TCS

  • HDFC Bank surpassed Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to become the country's second most valued firm in terms of market valuation.
  • The top five most valued firms in the country are: Reliance Industries Ltd. followed by HDFC Bank, TCS, ITC and HDFC Ltd.

Force Motors Ties up with Rolls Royce

  • Force Motors has tied up with Rolls Royce Power Systems for setting up a joint venture (JV) to produce engines for multiple applications like rail and power generation.
  • Force Motors will build a manufacturing facility as a part of the JV at a cost of about Rs. 300 crore. There was no clarity on how much Rolls Royce will invest in the venture.

Largest Solar Flare in 12 Years

  • Scientists have captured the Sun's largest solar flare in more than 12 years and the eight largest since 1996.
  • The huge burst of radiation, which was not harmful to humans due to the Earth's protective atmosphere and distance from the Sun.
  • The large solar bursts have energies comparable to one billion hydrogen bombs and can drive plasma away from the solar surface at speeds of up to 2,000 kilometres per second (km/s) in phenomena known as coronal mass ejections.

Bandhan Appoints Lead Managers

  • Bandhan Bank has appointed Goldman Sachs Group Inc., JP Morgan Chase & Co., Axis Bank, JM Financial and Kotak Mahindra Bank as lead managers to manage its proposed initial public offering (IPO).
  • The lender said that the appointment had been cleared by the bank’s board, although the size of the share sale, its timing and all other related aspects had not yet been finalised.

Committee for Safety of Students

  • The Haryana government has set up a committee that will frame guidelines on ways to ensure the safety of students following the gruesome murder of a seven-year-old boy in a school in Gurgaon.
  • This committee shall propose the guidelines as expeditiously as possible but not beyond two days.
  • The committee will comprise the additional directors of elementary and secondary education, district education officer, Panchkula, district attorney, deputy director (Utkarsh), assistant director (academic cell) and representatives of private schools.

India and Belarus Sign Pacts

  • India and Belarus inked 10 pacts to expand cooperation in a range of areas and decided to explore joint development and manufacture of military platforms, giving a fresh momentum in bilateral ties.
