No Shift in Policy on Pakistan

  • After agreeing to list Pakistan-based outfits Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as international terror groups during this week’s BRICS summit, China reassured Pakistan that there was no shift in its policy of recognising Islamabad’s role in countering global extremism.
  • Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that Beijing saw Islamabad as a close ally that is a key part of the battle against international terrorism.

Mexico's Biggest Quake in Decades

  • At least 36 people died when the most powerful earthquake to hit Mexico in over eight decades tore through buildings, forced mass evacuations and triggered alerts as far away as Southeast Asia.
  • The 8.1 magnitude quake off the southern coast was stronger than a devastating 1985 temblor that flattened swathes of Mexico City and killed thousands.
  • This time damage to the city was limited as the quake was deeper and further from the capital.

Habib Bank to Pay $225 Million Fine

  • As per the New York State Department of Financial Services, Pakistan`s Habib Bank had agreed to pay $225 million to settle an enforcement action brought against it for infringing laws designed to combat illicit money transfers.
  • The regulator said that the bank, known as HBL, agreed to pay just over a third of that sum as part of a broader settlement in which it will shutter its New York branch, subject to conditions.

Shriram Group and IDFC Ltd. Merger

  • The process leading up to the merger of the financial services business of the Shriram Group and IDFC Ltd. is complex and will take a while to complete.

Birla Carbon Begins China Operations

  • Birla Carbon, part of the diversified $41 billion Aditya Birla Group, has set up a 1.2 lakh metric tonnes greenfield carbon black project at Jining in the Shandong province of China.
  • The plant will be expanded to 2.4 lakh tonnes in the second phase. The plant will cater to the Chinese customer base.

Claims Settlement Ratio

  • New India Assurance, Royal Sundaram and Universal Sompo have among the highest claims settlement ratios in the non-life industry. The ratio represents the number of claims settled during a period out of the total claims intimated and is an important indicator of customer service.
  • In the public sector, New India Assurance is miles ahead of its peers with a claims settlement ratio of 71%, while its closest peer United India has a 55.4% ratio. The other two companies — Oriental and National Insurance — have ratios of 46.7% and 45.4% respectively.

U-17 World Cup

  • FIFA has made it clear that it is not comfortable with the Indian government's plan of having an opening ceremony for the Under-17 World Cup, saying the money should instead be spent on the game.
  • The world body and the Local Organising Committee have been insisting that FIFA tournaments do not have opening ceremonies worldwide.
  • FIFA and the Local Organising Committee of the FIFA U-17 World Cup have been working very closely with the Government of India to make the upcoming tournament a great success.
  • The Under-17 World Cup, the first ever FIFA event India is hosting, will be played in six cities -- New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Kochi and Margao -- from October 6 to 28.

Women in Military Police

  • The Army has finalised a plan to induct women in the military police.
  • The plan is seen as a major step towards breaking gender barriers in the force is to induct approximately 800 women in military police with a yearly intake of 52 personnel per year.

India's Act East Policy

  • In pursuant of India's 'Act East Policy', two Indian Naval Ships proceeded on deployment to East and South-East Asia.
  • INS Satpura commanded by Captain Rahul Shankar, and INS Kadmatt commanded by Commander Nithin Cariappa, departed from Visakhapatnam for a deployment of more than three months, to visit 12 ports in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, South Korea, Japan, Brunei and Russia.
  • During this deployment, the ships will participate in the International Fleet Review hosted by the Association of South East Asian Countries (ASEAN) at Thailand.
