BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

Core Sector Output Growth

  • Core sector output grew 2.4% year-on-year in July, helped by a low base in sectors including steel and electricity. The production performance of eight core industries — which comprise 40.27% of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) — in July 2017 was faster than June’s 0.8%. Cumulative growth during April-July, 2017-18, was 2.5%.

IRNSS-1H Satellite Launch Unsuccessful

  • India’s attempt to launch its eighth regional navigation satellite failed. The satellite IRNSS-1H didn’t come out of the heat shield as it should have, though the rocket’s lift off was as planned.
  • As per ISRO chief A. S. Kiran Kumar, there was no problem in any of the stages. But the heat shield has to separate. And once that happens the satellite gets into the orbit. It got separated internally. But it’s enclosed within the heat shield in the fourth stage.
  • IRNSS-1H was being sent to space to back up — and mostly replace — the functions of India's first navigation satellite.
