Israel Signs Deal for F-35 Warplanes

  • Israel signed a deal to buy additional 17 stealth F-35 US-made fighter jets.
  • The purchase was part of a larger deal to buy a total of 50 F-35 planes, the first of which arrived in Israel in December.
  • The acquisition is part of Israel`s plan to replace its fleet of F-16 fighter jets with 50 new F-35, citing a need to ensure its military`s qualitative edge in the region.

Iran Rejects Inspection of Military Sites

  • According to a senior military adviser, inspecting Iranian military sites under the pretext of the international nuclear deal is impossible.
  • The nuclear agreement signed between Iran and world`s six major powers two years ago allows no inspection of Iran`s military sites.

Syria Backs Evacuation Deal

  • The Syrian army has agreed to a deal between Islamic State and Hezbollah that allows the transfer of Islamic State militants from the Syria-Lebanon border into eastern Syria.
  • It remained unclear whether the deal includes Islamic State militants only on Syria`s side of the frontier or on Lebanese territory too.

Capital Support for Merger of PSBs

  • As per official sources, the Finance Ministry is open to providing capital support for facilitating consolidation among state-owned banks, which are reeling under mounting bad loans.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the setting up of an alternative mechanism, or a panel of ministers, to decide on consolidation proposals for state-run banks.
  • On receiving a proposal from stressed banks, if the Ministerial panel finds that the merger is going to create a strong bank, it will not let it go for want of fund shortage.
  • There are now 20 public sector banks (PSBs) other than SBI. These state-owned banks are grappling with Rs. 6 lakh crore worth of non-performing assets (NPAs) or bad loans, which is about 75% of the total distress.

Thirty Crore Jan Dhan Accounts

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that 30 crore families have been linked to Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in the last three years and Rs. 65,000 crore deposited in their accounts.
  • The Jan Dhan Yojana completes three years on August 28.

Uttar Pradesh Joins Government e-Market Portal

  • In a shot in the arm for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Government e-Market (GEM) project, the Yogi Adityanath government has passed orders that Uttar Pradesh will also be making all its procurement of goods and services through the central portal.
  • The UP government is shifting to GEM for procuring both goods and services.
  • This is a major step to cut down corruption in government procurements in UP and bring transparency to the huge expenditure made in this regard by the UP government.

India's First Videsh Bhavan

  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj inaugurated the country's first Videsh Bhavan in Mumbai.
  • The country's first Videsh Bhavan assimilates all Regional Passport Offices under one roof.
  • As a first pilot project, four offices of the MEA - Regional Passport Office (RPO), Protector of Emigrants (PoE) office, Branch Secretariat and Regional Office of the ICCR - have been assimilated and brought under one roof at the state-of-art office.

AIADMK to be Part of Modi Government

  • According to a senior BJP leader, the AIADMK will soon join the NDA and be a part of the Modi government at the Centre.
  • It is only a matter of time before an announcement is made on this.
