U.S. Violating Nuclear Deal

  • As per Iran, the new U.S. sanctions were a violation of its nuclear deal with world powers, piling pressure on President Hassan Rouhani as he starts his second term.
  • Mr. Rouhani vowed to keep up his efforts to end Iran’s isolation as he was sworn in by the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following his re-election in May. Iran believes that the nuclear deal has been violated and it will react appropriately.

UN Terror Tag for Masood Azhar Blocked Again

  • China has again extended by three months its technical hold on the US, France and UK-backed proposal to list Pakistani terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed chief and Pathankot terror attack mastermind Masood Azhar as a designated terrorist by the United Nations.
  • China had in February this year blocked the US move to designate Azhar as a global terrorist at UN. The deadline for China to take action on its technical hold was till August 2.
  • As per reports, China once again sought a three-month extension until November 2 on its technical hold on the proposal.

Pledge to Collaborate on Security Issue

  • Turkey has vowed to root out militants plotting against China as the two countries pledged to collaborate on a security issue that had been a source of friction.
  • According to Turkish Foreign Minister, Turkey would treat matters of China's security as its own, signaling close cooperation and a tougher stance against suspected Uighur militants hailing from China's Xinjiang region.

Services PMI to Lowest Since Sept. 2013

  • According to a survey, service sector activity in July slowed to its lowest level since September 2013, due in large part to the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax.
  • The Nikkei India Services Purchasing Managers’ Index registered a reading of 45.9 in July, falling from the eight-month high of 53.1 seen in June.

Titan’s Q1 Net Profit Rises

  • Titan Company’s net profit for the first quarter rose 96.84%, driven by its jewellery business. The jewellery division posted a 55% increase in income for the quarter.
  • The jewellery business contributed Rs. 3,352 crore to its overall revenue of Rs. 4,049.5 crore.

Banking Regulation Bill

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2017, which empowers the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to resolve stressed assets clogging the banking system.
  • The Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2017, seeks to amend the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and replace the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017, which was promulgated in May this year.
  • The measure allows the RBI to initiate insolvency resolution process on specific stressed assets.

Exoplanet with Glowing Water Atmosphere

  • For the first time, scientists have discovered glowing water molecules in the atmosphere of a planet outside our solar system.
  • It is the strongest evidence to date for a stratosphere on a planet outside our solar system, or exoplanet.
  • The planet called WASP-121b is a gas giant exoplanet commonly referred to as a hot Jupiter.

Pujara Goes Past Tendulkar and Kohli

  • Cheteshwar Pujara became the joint second-fastest Indian to score 4,000 Test.
  • Legendary Rahul Dravid also took same number of innings to achieve the feat.
  • Both the middle-order batsmen are behind former openers Virender Sehwag and Sunil Gavaskar in the all-time list of Indian batsmen.
  • However, Pujara has overtaken Sachin Tendulkar and his captain Virat Kohli in the list.

India’s First Private Missile Production Facility

  • India’s first private sector missile sub-systems manufacturing facility, a joint venture between the $2.5 billion Kalyani Group and Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd., was inaugurated near Hyderabad.
  • To begin with, the Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS) plant will make anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) Spike and the production is expected to begin in a few weeks.

BJP Overtakes Congress in Rajya Sabha

  • The BJP overtook Congress to become the largest political party in the Rajya Sabha, where it now has 58 members against 57 of the main opposition party.
  • This is the first time that the saffron party has become the number one formation in the RS after the Narendra Modi government came to power in May 2014.
  • The BJP-led NDA, however, is still short of a decisive majority in the house but the joining of JD(U) to the ruling block has further boosted its numbers.
