NATO Allies to Spend More on Defence

  • European NATO allies and Canada will increase defence spending this year by 4.3%, amid pressure from President Donald Trump to spend more.
  • Mr. Trump has repeatedly berated the allies for not doing more to share the defence burden and bluntly told them again at a leaders’ summit that they could not count on Washington coming to their defence if they did not do their bit.

Call for Execution of Ex-South Korean President

  • North Korea has issued a standing order for the execution of former South Korean President Park Geun-hye and her spy chief for a plot to assassinate its leader, and it demanded that the South hand the pair over.
  • As per the North`s official KCNA, revelation showed that Park had masterminded a plot to execute its supreme leadership in 2015 and it was imposing "death penalty” on traitor Park Geun-hye.

TVS in Pact with Abans

  • TVS Motor Company has signed a pact with Abans Auto, a leading distributor in Sri Lanka.
  • The partnership will facilitate the Chennai-based company to sell TVS King, the 200 cc passenger three-wheeler, in the island nation. The tie-up will help TVS Motor to leverage the network of Abans Auto.
  • The alliance with Abans in Sri Lanka comes close on the heels of TVS Motor announcing its foray into the Central American market.

SAIC Enters India

  • SAIC Motor Corporation, China’s largest automobile company with annual revenue of $100 billion, has announced plans to enter the Indian market, which is projected to be among the top three automobile markets in the world by 2020.
  • The company also announced the formation of MG Motors India, a 100% subsidiary, for commencing its Indian operations.

Recommendations of 7th Pay Commission

  • Union Cabinet has approved recommendations of 7th Pay Commission on allowances.
  • The 7th Pay Commission's recommendations have been cleared with 34 modifications. The revised rates will be effective from 1st July 2017.
  • The increased allowance will impose an additional annual burden of Rs 30,748 crore on the exchequer.
  • House Rent Allowance will be paid at 24 per cent, 16 per cent and eight per cent for X,Y, Z cities respectively.

GSAT-17 Launched Successfully

  • India's latest communication satellite GSAT-17 was successfully launched by a heavy duty rocket of Arianespace from the spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana.
  • GSAT-17 is the 21st satellite from ISRO to be launched by Arianespace, and its designed in-orbit operational life is about 15 years.

  • Indian Super League has been finally granted official recognition by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), meaning there will be two national leagues in the country from 2017-18.
  • The franchise-based league didn't have AFC recognition in its first three editions.

Polling for Post of Vice President

  • According to the Election Commission, the date of polling for the post of Vice President will be announced by this month-end.
  • The term of Hamid Ansari, who has held the post for two consecutive terms, is coming to an end on August 10.
  • The Electoral College which elects the Vice President, who is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, consists of elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.

  • Jammu and Kashmir's ruling Peoples Democratic Party assured NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind of its support in the forthcoming election to Rashtrapati Bhawan.
