  • U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that he is under investigation for obstruction of justice, claiming that he is being investigated for firing FBI Director James Comey by the man who told him to do it.

Germany Claims US Harming EU Firms

  • Germany accused Washington of hurting European power companies through its new sanctions against Russia that target the planned Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Europe.
  • The new measures, approved by the US Senate, include a threat to penalise companies that provide goods, services, technology, information or support for the construction of Russian energy export pipelines.

Earth Warming to Tipping Point

  • A monthly analysis of global temperatures by NASA scientists has revealed that May 2017 was the second warmest May in 137 years of modern record-keeping, indicating that our climate is changing and quickly.
  • The monthly analysis by the scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York is assembled from publicly available data acquired by about 6,300 meteorological stations around the world, ship-and buoy-based instruments measuring sea surface temperature, and Antarctic research stations.
  • The modern global temperature record began around 1880 because previous observations did not cover enough of the planet.

Topy to Buy 26% in Wheels Unit

  • Wheels India Ltd. (WIL) of the TVS group and Topy Industries Ltd. of Japan have expanded their technical collaboration in the passenger car steel wheel business into an equity relationship.
  • Under an agreement signed, Topy will acquire 26% stake in WIL Car Wheels Ltd. (WCWL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Wheels India. Topy will be issued fresh shares to facilitate its equity investment in WCWL.
  • The equity capital of WCWL is Rs. 5 crore. While Wheels India’s share will be Rs. 3.7 crore, the rest will be held by Topy.

Income Tax Collections Rise

  • Net income tax collection till June 15 grew at a healthy 26.2% to Rs. 1,01,024 crore from across the country from Rs. 80,075 crore in the year-ago period.
  • Among the metros, the Mumbai zone registered the highest revenue collection growth during the period with a growth of a whopping 138%.
  • The Mumbai zone contributes over one-third of nationwide direct tax collections.

Aadhaar Mandatory for Opening Bank A/c

  • The central government has made it a must to quote the Aadhaar for opening bank account and financial transactions of Rs. 50,000 and above in a bid to curb black money.
  • All existing account holders have also been asked to submit Aadhaar to banks by December 31, 2017, failing which accounts will become invalid.

Seeking to Curb Kiran Bedi's Powers

  • The Puducherry Assembly passed a resolution for absolute powers to the V. Narayanasamy government to check the style of functioning of Lt Governor Kiran Bedi.
  • Claiming that the Lt Governor had no powers to take any decision arbitrarily, the Chief Minister said that she should act in consultation and concurrence of the elected ministry.
