Largest West Bank Settlements

  • Israel has approved over 8,000 news settlements in the West Bank, thus making it the largest expansion of Jewish homes in the area in 25 years.
  • This time Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved the largest number of settlements since 1992.
  • This is the most controversial step by Israel as the construction of settlements in the region is considered illegal under international law.

Qatar Shipping Cargo through Oman

  • Qatar has begun shipping cargo through to Oman to bypass Gulf countries that have cut off sea routes to the energy rich nation.
  • Typically, cargo for Qatar stops at Dubai's massive deep-water Jebel Ali Port, then gets put on smaller boats heading to Doha.
  • As per Qatar's port authority, its cargo will go through Sohar, as well as Oman's port at Salalah.

The Larsen C Ice Shelf

  • Very soon, a large portion of an ice shelf in Antarctica will break off and collapse into the ocean. The name of the ice shelf is Larsen C; it is a major extension from of the West Antarctic ice sheet, and its health has implications for other ice in the region, and sea levels globally.
  • Scientists have been watching a major rift (crack) that has grown in the past few years, carving out a section of floating ice nearly the size of Delaware. The speed of the crack has increased dramatically in the past few months, and it is nearly cracked through.

Inflation Slows to Lowest

  • As per data released by Central Statistics Office, India's industrial production grew by 3.1 per cent in April due to good performance of electricity, mining and manufacturing sectors, (CSO).
  • The manufacturing sector, which accounts for over 75 percent of the index, grew by 2.6 percent in May.
  • Retail inflation fell to a record low of 2.18 percent in May as prices of kitchen staples like vegetables and pulses declined sharply.

States to Bear Farm Loan Waivers

  • According to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the union government will not partake in states’ fiscal leverage in waiving farm loans and made it clear that the cost has to be borne by them.
  • The stance of the central government assumes significance against the backdrop of farm debt waiver announced by Maharashtra.
  • Uttar Pradesh was the first state this year to announce a whopping Rs 36,359 crore farm debt waiver for small and marginal farmers.

Two Massive Planets Discovered

  • Astronomers have discovered two new gas giant planets, orbiting a star located about 138 light years away from the Earth.
  • One of the two worlds is a Saturn-mass planet, while the other one is a cold exoplanet several times more massive than Jupiter.
  • The two planets orbit a star HD 27894, which was first detected in 2005 and is about 20 per cent less massive than the sun.
  • The two gas giant exoplanets have received designations HD 27894 c and HD 27894 d.

Diverse Minerals in Martian Rocks

  • Examining initial samples of rocks collected by NASA's Mars Curiosity rover, scientists have found a wide diversity of minerals in the lower-most layers of Mount Sharp Mountain.
  • The minerals found in the four samples drilled near the base of Mount Sharp suggest several different environments were present in ancient Gale Crater.
  • At the base are minerals from a primitive magma source; they are rich in iron and magnesium.
  • Moving higher in the section, scientists saw more silica-rich minerals.

Kumble to Continue as Team India Coach

  • With much speculation surrounding Anil Kumble's future as Team India coach amidst rumours of rift with Virat Kohli, CoA chief Vinod Rai has confirmed that no change in the position will be made until the end of India – West Indies series.
  • India will tour the West Indies for a five-ODI series starting June 23 followed by a lone Twenty20 match on July 9.

R. K. Sharma to Administer Sahara Life

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) appointed R. K. Sharma, general manager (F&A-NL), as administrator for managing the affairs of Sahara India Life Insurance Company Ltd. with immediate effect.
  • The administrator has been directed to file a report on the most advantageous course of action in the interest of the holders of life insurance policies, as soon as may be possible.

Justice C. S. Karnan Retires

  • Calcutta High Court judge Justice C. S. Karnan, who is facing six months imprisonment for contempt of the Supreme Court has retired, probably escaping the odium of a sitting judge being arrested while in office.
  • Justice Karnan was transferred to Kolkata after he had kicked up a row by raking up issues against other judges of the Madras High Court, including the Chief Justice.

TechGig Code Gladiators

  • TechGig Code Gladiators 2017, the flagship coding contest conducted by TechGig annually, has been declared as the largest programming event by the Guinness World Records. The contest saw 2,09,111 participants.
  • According to Guinness officials, TechGig had attracted 81,641 unique submissions from programmers at the Code Gladiators 2017 and the previous record was set in 2012 by Baidu Online Network Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. (China) which attracted 30,634 entrants.
