North Korean Missile Launches

  • Diplomats at the United Nations denounced the cruise missile launches by North Korea, though no immediate meeting has been planned for the Security Council.
  • Ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests are banned by the UN and could trigger sanctions.
  • The volley of surface-to-ship cruise missiles North Korea launched were much slower than ballistic missiles and can be shot down by anti- aircraft guns.

Qatar Rejects Intervention in Foreign Policy

  • Qatar`s foreign minister rejected attempts to interfere in the country`s foreign policy and said that a military solution to the country`s crisis with its Gulf neighbours was not an option.

HDFC Life and Max Merger Deal

  • HDFC Life and Max Life are evaluating various options to merge and both the companies are committed to the deal despite reservations expressed by the insurance regulator.
  • Earlier this month IRDAI had reaffirmed its original position regarding Section 35 of the Insurance Act, 1938. Section 35 of the Insurance Act, 1938 does not allow the merger of an insurance firm with a non-insurance firm.
  • In August 2016, the boards of HDFC Life and Max group companies had approved the merger of HDFC Life and Max Life, a deal which would have created the largest private sector life insurance company in the country.

Srei Signs MoU with Vnesheconombank

  • Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia’s state development institution, Vnesheconombank, to create a $200 million IT and Innovation Fund.
  • Srei is among India’s larger integrated infrastructure institutions with about $5.5 billion of consolidated assets under its management.
  • Vnesheconombank operates to enhance the competitiveness, the diversification of the Russian economy while stimulating investment activity.

Foodgrains, Milk, Veggies to be Cheaper under GST

  • According to the government, foodgrains, flour, milk, vegetables and fruits will get cheaper by up to 5 per cent once the Goods and Services Tax is rolled out.
  • The government has exempted cereals, pulses, atta, maida and besan from the GST.
  • Milk, vegetables and fruits, puffed rice, salt, organic manure, animal feed, fire wood, raw silk, wool, jute and hand-operated agriculture equipment too will be zero-rated under the new indirect tax regime.

NASA Picks 12 New Astronauts

  • After evaluating a record-breaking number of applicants, NASA has chosen 12 new astronauts, including an Indian-American, who will be trained for missions into Earth orbit and to deep space.
  • The 12 new astronaut candidates, seven men and five women, were chosen from more than 18,300 people who submitted applications.

Rohan Bopanna’s First Grand Slam Title

  • Doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna captured his first Grand Slam title when he teamed up with Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski to beat Robert Farah and Anna-Lena Gronefeld in the mixed doubles final of French Open 2017.
  • Bopanna thus became the fourth Indian to win a Grand Slam title.

First Sri Lankan Inducted into ICC Hall of Fame

  • Muttiah Muttiah Muralidaran, the most successful bowler in Tests and One Day Internationals, was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
  • The Sri Lankan spin great was honoured during the innings break of the India versus Sri Lanka Champions Trophy match at The Oval.

Through the Wall Radars in Kashmir

  • Aiming to detect terrorists who might be hiding in wall cavities or false ceilings, the Indian Army will now use ‘through the wall' radar imaging during counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir Valley.
  • It is useful for detecting small changes in electromagnetic waves induced by humans; this includes even micro-movements caused by breathing.
  • It would enable forces to get the pinpointed location of terrorists hiding inside homes in congested areas and also avoid civilian casualties.

Arunachal Pradesh Hikes Ex-gratia

  • Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced that the families of paramilitary troopers and soldiers dying on duty in Arunachal Pradesh will now get ex-gratia of Rs. 50 lakh, a sharp hike from the earlier Rs. 2 lakh.
  • In the case of grievous or serious injury, the ex-gratia has been doubled to Rs 50,000. And in case of permanent disability, this will go up from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh,
  • Khandu the ex-gratia would also be applicable for permanent residents of Arunachal Pradesh employed in the paramilitary forces and armed forces anywhere in India.
