Dostum Goes Into Exile

  • Amid a criminal investigation into rape accusations against him, Afghanistan’s embattled Vice-President, Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum, left for Turkey in what Afghan and Western officials suggested could be another long exile for the former warlord.

GPDRR Mexico Meet

  • India is participating in the five-day Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) summit being held in Mexico.
  • The Indian delegation is led by Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju.
  • The summit, held at Mexico’s Cancun, is expected to be attended by over 5,000 delegates comprising heads of state, ministers, CEOs, disaster experts, volunteers, academia, and representatives from the science and technology sectors.

KEC International Bags Orders

  • Engineering, procurement and construction major KEC International has won new orders worth Rs. 945 crore. Under transmission and distribution business, the company bagged orders worth Rs. 560 crore in India, Sri Lanka and the Americas.
  • KEC International, an RPG Group firm, has posted a 91 per cent increase in consolidated net profit for the quarter ended March 31.

Private Firms Eye Key Defence Role

  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, approved the broad contours of a policy aimed at engaging the private sector in the manufacture of high-tech defence equipment in India.
  • Under the Strategic Partnership plan, the DAC has approved four platforms in which the private sector will play a key role in the first stage: fighter aircraft, submarines, armoured vehicles and helicopters.
