The U.S. and Japan to Attend Silk Road Summit

  • China’s bid to internationalise its Belt and Road connectivity initiative received a shot in the arm with the U.S. deciding to send a high level delegation to an upcoming international forum in the Chinese capital.
  • France and South Korea have also decided to send delegates to the Belt and Road Forum, and Japan is being represented by Shinzo Abe’s senior adviser and Secretary General of the Liberal Democratic Party, Toshihiro Nikai. Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang is already in the Chinese capital for parleys with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
  • Leaders from 29 countries and regions as well as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde and World Bank President Kim Yong will also attend the event.

Hepatitis Ambassador in Southeast Asia

  • Amitabh Bachchan has been appointed the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for the Hepatitis awareness programme in Southeast Asia region.
  • The World Health Organisation announced that the veteran actor has been brought on board to boost awareness and intensify action to arrest the Hepatitis epidemic.
  • Amitabh had earlier served as Unicef Goodwill Ambassador for the polio eradication campaign in India, and has been supporting and promoting various health and related issues in the country.

  • As per reports, Russia's President Vladimir Putin that he is ready to play a constructive role in resolving North Korea`s nuclear threat.

Anti-dumping Duty on Steel Products

  • India has imposed anti-dumping duty on 47 steel products from half-a-dozen nations, including China, Japan, Korea, Russia and Indonesia, to protect domestic industry from cheap imports. According to an official notification the anti-dumping duty would be in effect for five years beginning August 8, 2016. The duties are in the range of $478-$561 per tonne.

India's Industrial Output Growth Slips

  • Industrial output growth slipped to 2.7 per cent in March, chiefly because of poor performance of the manufacturing sector.

Signs of Water Detected on Neptune-sized Planet

  • Scientists have detected a water signature on the atmosphere of a distant Neptune-sized planet that could help in exploring more about the birth and development of planetary systems.
  • A study shows that the distant planet HAT- P-26b has a primitive atmosphere composed almost entirely of hydrogen and helium.
  • Located about 437 light-years away, HAT-P-26b orbits a star roughly twice as old as our sun.

  • The Election Commission will offer the opportunity to political parties to demonstrate EVMs used in recent elections have been tampered, or EVMs can be tampered even with laid down safeguards.
  • As per the Chief Election Commissioner, all future elections will be held on VVPAT (Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail).
