India Cyprus ink 4 pacts

India and Cyprus signed four agreements, including one for air services, as Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades held talks with PM Narendra Modi. This is Anastasiades’s first visit to India since becoming President in 2013. Cyprus has already expressed its support for India’s entry into the elite Nuclear Suppliers group, . India and Cyprus also signed an executive programme on culture, education and scientific cooperation from 2017 to 2020. Both countries signed a work plan under a programme for cooperation in the agriculture sector for 2017-18.

Indian MPs in UK to Talk Modern Slavery

India is attending a crucial gathering on modern slavery the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s (CPA) UK branch is hosting in London. Eight MPs are part of the Indian delegation to the conference which will focus on the alarming problems in the Asia Pacific region. The workshop “ Working Together Against Modern Slavery” will find ways to address the issue when there is no globally recognised definition of modern slavery. BJP’s Jagdambika Pal is leading the delegation comprising Parliamentarians BK Hariprasad, Satish Chandra Mishra, PK Sreemati Teacher, Raman Deka, AT Patil, Bhupendra Yadav, and Anju Bala.

Parliamentary violence in Macedonia

Scores of people were injured as violence erupted in Macedonia’s parliament after nationalist protesters stormed the building in anger over a vote for a new speaker. The chaos in Skopje broke out with dozens of demonstrators, breaking a police cordon and entering parliament waving Macedonian flags, shouting and singing the National Anthem.

General Motors Stopped Production at Halol

US auto major General Motors stopped production at its first Indian plant in Halol, Gujarat, as part of consolidation of manufacturing operation in the country. The company’s arm, General Motors India will now operate all of its manufacturing operations from its second plant at Talegaon in Maharashtra. 

Kotak Bank Buys out Old Mutual from Insurance Arm

Kotak Mahindra bank announced a Rs.1292 buyout of the British partner Old Mutual’s 26% stake in its life insurance arm. The fourth largest private sector lender will become the 100% owner of the 16-year old Kotak Mahindra Old Mutual Life Insurance post acquisition. 

7-year Bonds for NRIs to Bail Out Farmers of Punjab

The Punjab government will seek the help of NRIs  to extricate farmer from the vicious cycle of debt. It intends floating interest-free masala bonds that are issued outside India but denominated in Indian rupees. The proposed Kisan Sahayata bonds, each with a minimum value of Rs. 1 lakh will have a seven year tenure. The money raised will be used to pay off institutional debt availed by farmers. The total debt in Punjab stands at Rs. 62,931 crore.

Harika Adjudged Best Player among Women

Indian Grandmaster Harika Dronavali ended her campaign on a high note with a win over Jakob Pfreundt on Germany at the Reykjavik Open. She ended the tournament with six wins, two draws and two losses to finish 17th with seven points in the Swiss Tournament, which saw 267 players across the globe compete for coveted crown. The Indian was also adjudged the Best women’s player of the tournament.

Director of IMTECH Honoured

Dr. Anil Koul, Director of the Chandigarh based institute of Microbial technology, has been conferred with the Sun Pharma Science Foundation Award for his role in the discovery and development of Sirturotm, a novel drug against Tuberculosis. The award was presented to him by the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda.

KK Sharma appointed as the Chairman of PRTC

KK Sharma , former chairman of Patiala improvement Trust, has been appointed Chairman of the Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC). He has also been appointed PPCC General Secretary. The corporation post had fallen vacant after the resignation of incumbent Navdeep Singh Brar.

YS Ratra appointed Chairman of Pungrain

Former state Chief Secratary YS Ratra was appointed Chairman of Punjab State Grains Procurement Corporation Limited (Pungrain). Ratra has also served as the Chairman of  Punjab state Electricity Board.
