Afghan Defence Minister, Army Chief Resign

  • Afghan President Ashraf Ghani accepted the resignations of his Defence Minister and Army Chief of Staff, after more than 140 soldiers were killed last week in the deadliest ever Taliban attack on a military base.
  • Defence Minister Abdullah Habibi and Army Chief of Staff Qadam Shah Shahim stepped down with immediate effect.

Seventy Million Year Old Dinosaur Egg

  • Scientists have unearthed five ancient dinosaur eggs fossilsdating back to 70 million years, in China.
  • The eggs are said to be round in shape and researchers say that they belonged to to plant-eating phytophagous dinosaurs in the late Cretaceous period.

7th Pay Commission

  • As per media reports, the committee on allowances will submit its final report in the month end. The committee on allowances headed by Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa that was set up to review the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission.
  • If the Committee accepts the bare recommendations of A K Mathur-led 7th Pay Commission then the HRA component of central government employees will increase ranging between 106 percent and 122 per cent.

SBI and CREDAI Ink MoU

  • State-owned SBI and realtors' body CREDAI have signed an agreement to provide loans at a concessional rate to builders as well as customers for affordable housing projects.
  • The duration of the agreement is for a period of three years.
  • SBI and CREDAI have also tied up for development of green real estate projects.

India Becomes 5th Largest Military Spender

India is now the world’s fifth largest military spender on defence for 2016 after having moved up from the 7th place following its largest annual military spending increase since 2009.India spent $55.9 billion on defence in 2016. China becomes the second largest spender, while Pakistan does not feature in the top 15 spenders. The ranking was released by Swedish think-tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).It was titled as “Trends in World Military Expenditure,2016”. The US is the top spending, while Russia is the third largest spender.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2016

  • As per reports, renowned film director and actor Shri Kasinadhuni Viswanath will be conferred with the 48th Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2016.
  • Viswanath will be bestowed this honour for his for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of indian cinema.
  • He has won 5 National Awards, 20 Nandi Awards (awarded by the State Government of Andhra Pradesh), 10 Filmfare Awards including Lifetime Achievement Award.

Manpreet Kaur Clinches Gold

  • Indian shot putter Manpreet Kaur clinched a gold in the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet with a national record and world season-leading effort here.
  • Manpreet came up with a best throw of 18.86m, which is nearly one meter more than her earlier national record of 17.96m that she had set in 2015.

101 Year Old Man Kaur celebrated winning of 100 metres Sprint

101 Year old Man Kaur celebrated winning the 100 metres Sprint at the World Master Games. It is the 17th gold medal in the athlete’s remarkable late-blooming career. She clocked 1 minute 14 seconds , ending a mere 64.42 seconds off Ussain Bolt’s 100 m world record set in 2009.

25 CRPF Jawans Killed

  • Twenty-five CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) jawans were killed by Naxals in an encounter in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district.
  • The encounter between 74th battalion of the force and Naxals occurred around 12:25 pm in Kalapathar area of south Bastar region.

Winding up of RTS Panel by the State government

The Punjab  state government has decided to wind up the Right to Service (RTS) Commission set up under the Punjab Right to Service Act 2011, by the previous SAD-BJP government in 2011.To ensure more transparency and accountability, the act will be replaced by the Punjab Transparency and Accountability in Multimode delivery of Public Service Act, 2017.
