Canberra Toughens Citizenship Test

  • Canberra unveiled plans to put Australian values at the heart of tougher requirements to gain citizenship, days after scrapping a visa programme for temporary foreign workers. The moves came against a background of growing populist pressure and a resurgence of the anti-immigration One Nation party led by Pauline Hanson.
  • The new requirements include competent English, belief in gender equality and a four-year qualification period.

Time's Most Influential People List

  • The much-awaited Time magazine's annual list of 100 most influential people is out and it features Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Paytm Vijay Shekhar Sharma.
  • US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and their Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have also been named by Time magazine among the 100 most influential people in the world in its annual list of global achievers.
  • The list features pioneers, artists, titans, leaders and icons from around the world.

Land Provision Process for Thaad Completed

  • South Korea and the US completed the regulatory process needed for Seoul's provision of a base site to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (Thaad) missile defence system.
  • A bilateral committee on the status of US Forces Korea (USFK) approved the plan for land transfer, allowing the US military to begin work for the deployment.
  • The approval will allow the USFK to expedite the deployment of the advanced missile shield system whose first elements, including two missile launchers have already arrived in South Korea.

Reliance Defence Allowed to Exit CDR

  • Reliance Defence Engineering Ltd. has got lenders’ approval to exit the corporate debt restructuring (CDR) mechanism as the consortium of banks led by IDBI has agreed to refinance Rs. 6,800 crore of debt at lower interest with an extended maturity of 20 years.
  • Now, Reliance Defence will be eligible to bid for the upcoming contracts for making submarines, landing platform dock and corvette. The other private firm in the race for contracts is L&T.

BSE to Include 11 Companies in SLB Segment

  • BSE will add 11 companies in securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segment from next month.
  • The 11 companies are Fortis Healthcare, Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals, Nestle India, Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals, Berger Paints India, Can Fin Homes, V-Guard Industries, Godfrey Phillips India, Balrampur Chini Mills, Raymond and Balkrishna Industries.
  • SLB mechanism allows short sellers to borrow securities for making deliveries. There are more than 200 companies in the BSE SLB segment.

China First Cargo Spacecraft

  • China has launched its first cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-1 from the Wenchang Space Launch Centre in Hainan province.
  • Tianzhou-1 is the first cargo ship independently developed by China.
  • The cargo spacecraft will dock with the orbiting Tiangong-2 space lab, provide fuel and other supplies, and conduct space experiments before returning.

ICC Champions Trophy

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India is considering pulling team India out of the tournament as ICC plans to introduce a new constitution which aims to reduce India’s share in resources.
  • The BCCI also threatened ICC to not let India take part in the tournament nicknamed as 'Mini World Cup', unless the 'Big Three' proposal is not met.
  • BCCI reserves its rights to take all necessary decisions to exercise the rights under the Members Participation Agreement.
  • India is the richest cricket board in the world.

  • Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba conferred Gallantry and Service Awards to Navy personnel on behalf of the President Pranab Mukherjee.
  • The Naval Investiture Ceremony is an annual event for the Indian Navy.

Inter-state ISIS Terror Module Busted

  • The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad arrested at least three suspected terrorists believed to be associated with the global terror outfit, the Islamic State (ISIS).
  • According to reports, those arrested are believed to be part of an ISIS module that was looking for potential recruits in Bihar, UP, Rajasthan and Maharashtra.
  • The Uttar Pradesh ATS, with the help of police teams from six states, arrested these three suspected ISIS terrorists from Jalandhar in Punjab, Mumbai and Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh.
